I want to start making rolled butter cream for cookie bouquets etc and noticed that people mention that you need a heavy duty mixer like kitchen aid because it's so hard on the mixer. Is this true? If so, what should I be looking for in a mixer and where is the best place to look for a reasonable price? Thanks so much!

You need to decide what size you need and want, also you have to decide if you want the bowl lift or tilt head. Amazon.com has excellent prices. $199.00 for a 4 1/2 quart basic to $329.00 for the 6 quart top of the line. I have a 30 year old basic I'm happy with that, but I have never used it for anything but personal baking and other food prep. There are other brands out there that are also excellent. A stand mixer is a good investment, figure out what demands you are going to make on the mixer and buy appropriately.

Will the less expensive Sunbeam be able to handle rolled buttercream or should I just make the leap and get the KA???

This is an excellent review of both stand and hand held mixers. http://www.consumersearch.com/www/kitchen/mixers/index.html?source=adwords&gclid=CMP7747MtIsCFRE9VAod3jIK2A It seems a very fair and accurate overview. Definitely worth reading entirely.

One thing to look for is the type of bowl -silly yeah, but if you go w/ the KA brand...it helps to get the style of bowl w/ a handle attached to it. I love my KA mixer, and I got it from a store called Kitchen Collection (they gave a 10% military discount).

Something I found that was VERY helpful when I bought my KA--Bed, Bath, & Beyond sends out 20% off coupons every month or so, which alone is a great deal, but they also do price match!!! I printed out an online add for the pink KA Artisan for $250 (sold for $300 normally at BB&B), used my coupon for 20% off, and wound up paying $210 (including tax) for a mixer than normally would have cost me $315. I also found a $20 rebate on the KA website, so when it was all said and done I wound up with Candy Girl, my beautiful pink KA, for $190!!!!!
