I am making a cake for a 21st birthday. She asked me to make the cake brown with a deep red or burgundy border and polka dots. She said i can add in one more color for the polka dots...Any ideas?

Is there a way I can make the dots with BC rather than fondant?

Thanks! icon_biggrin.gif

Do you mean the dots that look like pearls or the dots that look like play doh that's been rolled out and cut with a round cookie cutter?

If you mean the dots that look like pearls, I make all of those from BC directly on the side of the cake.

Deep burgundy on brown? The dots won't even show up! Maybe you can do a milk chocolate brown rather than a dark brown. I'd add deep mauve as an accent color. You can do the dots with buttercream if you pipe them on with a fairly large round tip (8 or bigger). Then, after the icing has crusted a bit, gently pat the dots smooth with your finger. If you use a non-crusting icing, pop the cake in the frig or freezer for a few minutes, then, smooth out the dots. Personally, I prefer fondant dots.

am I the only one that thinks the cake needs a very LIGHT color for contrast w/ all the dark colors?

like even all the way to WHITE dots (blasted w/ pearl dust!)??

I should have clarified what type of brown I was using lol. I was intending on using a lighter brown, like milk chocolate brown just as DianeLM said.

I think the girl meant those big circles you use the cookie cutters with on the fondant. She wanted dots as the border.

I apologize for not wording this better icon_redface.gif

So, can you make those circles with BC?

Thanks for your comments!

You can make the circles in a silpad, then frieze them. when they are hard peel them away the silpad and ad to your buttercream
see my photos, the first one is a polka dot cake

I agree with Doug - you need a light color to contrast, even if the brown is a lighter shade. I think white would look good, or even pink (if she likes pink). You could even go with a lighter shade of blue - that always looks nice with reds! ( wouldn't go green because it would look like Christmas!)

I like both ideas...blue and pink. I'm gonna run it by her and see what color she would like. I was thinking orange or yellow but I figured it would look like a xmas cake lol

Thanks for your ideas!
