I just got a call for a mermaid cake. I have never done one of these and was honest about that, but the client says she's pretty sure that's what she wants. That or a dolphin. Please help me. I have 11 days to figure this out and I don't have any clue where to begin. I do know she doesn't want a sheet cake. She wants this to really look like a mermaid. Tips, hints, ideas, pictures? Please throw them all my way ASAP!
Thanks so much ladies,
Rigama
Rigama,
I recently did a mermaid cake. I used the Wilton shell pan and made two shells that I covered and painted then perched a mermaid on top with some coral, seaweed and an octopus.
Let me know if you need any more hints. Other wise there are heaps of them on cc, do a search for mermaids in the gallery.
Cheers,
Fran
Rigama,
You can easily adapt this to suit whatever you want.
You can make a single shell and cover it in buttercream, and add a doll instead of making a sugarpaste mermaid, it looks complex but it can quite easily be simplified.
Good luck with whatever you do, and don't forget to show us the photos ![]()
Cheers,
Fran
PS Thanks everyone for the lovely comments on my cake....you're tooooo nice ![]()
Is this for a child or adult? I've done a doll cake where you stick a doll into the cake and proceed to decorate like a mermaid. If you search mermaid in the galleries, you can see what I'm talking about.
As far as the dolphin, I found the following pan that's available. http://www.chefdepot.net/graphics24/dolphin_cake_pan_mold.jpg
Hopefully this helps.
Wow Fran! That's a great cake.
Rigama - You could also do something like that with the wonder mold doll pan. Insert the doll, cover the cake with blue and than make a fishtail out of MMF. Cover the doll itself with the same colour you made the fishtail. For decoration you could add some "nemo" fishes of some extra shells. If you're very creative - you could even give the little mermaid a shellnecklace. Hope it works out fine!
I love the idea of using the wonder mold pan. I thought of this last night when I was supposed to be paying attention in a meeting! Do you think the sports ball pan would work? I have it, but not the wonder mold(or shell). I'm thnking I could decorate it to look like a rock, shove the doll inside and turn her into a mermaid. But the ball pan is just so-ROUND, I'm afraid it'll look absolutely silly!
And wow, there are some amazing pics in the gallery!
do you happen to have metal mixing bowls?
I have several that nest inside each other ( a well appreciated wedding gift from a cousin) and you could use them as a cake pan.
They wouldn't be as round as a ball pan. You could put the ball pan on a couple of cake rounds and carve to form a rock for your mermaid to sit on.
Love it when I can use what I have around the house. ![]()
