A friend of mine said that she would like me to make a cake for her husband's birthday this summer. Seeing as I haven't really done anything yet, and only start my Wilton course tomorrow, I told her to ask me again in a month - in case I suck. icon_razz.gif
Anyways, I have some great ideas already, mostly thanks to this site! I want to put two wrestlers on the cake - which will look like a wrestling ring. My question is: should I use plastic figurines, or make them out of fondant/MMF/candy clay/gumpaste? And if I make them myself, what should I use?
Any insight is appreciated.
Thanks!

I would suggest fondant or gumpaste......MMF is fondant just made with marshmallows.......and it tastes a TON better than Wilton's fondant. Anyhow that all depends on how good you are at hand molding figures@!!!! The gumpaste will dry rock hard, the fondant will get firm...but probably won't completely be like a rock, the gumpaste and fondant can be handpainted though...the candy clay, not so much........being that they are people you're probably gonna want detail, so I would suggest the fondant or gumpaste.

Thanks! I might try using MMF, just because it looks easy to make, and I don't have a place nearby that sells fondant. I guess I will find out how handy I am with modeling fondant! I have a few months to work on it, who knows, I might be good by then!

Hi,
try to make your owm moddelling psate if you cann't find fondant.

The recepie i use i found it on this website
http://www.marcelacapo.com/MarcelaCapo_ingles/galeria.htm#
i absolutely love her work.

100 gr of white vegetable fat (crisco)
350 cc of water

200 gr of flour
3 tbs of glucose
1.5 kg of icing sugar (approximately)
1 table spoon of gum tragacanth, or gumtex
some flavors and vanilla
I like rum and vanilla. gives a nice smell to it.

Combine white fat and water, heat until begins boil then
Add flour and mix together well.
Wait while the mixture gets cool.
Add glucose and flavors.
Mix gum tragacanth with icing sugar. add to the flour preparation and knead until get a soft and elastic paste. don't add all the sugar once. because maybe you would have needed less sugar. For this amount of flour paste put the first kilo knead and then add by cups til it is with a perfect constistency.

When ready wrap it in the clingfilm. This is a lot of paste, enough to make 50 figures i think, so you can easily make just 1/4 or 1/2 of to try out some figures for practice.
Good luck with your cake!

Hmm, i had to check out my babys bottle. cc is the same as a ml and
now 140ml is in the same point in the bottle as 5 oz so i think 350 around 12oz? I hope maybe somebody else has better table to check the ml and oz relationship. icon_redface.gif
