You could always do the Over the Hill cakes - here's some without the tombstones

I was thinking maybe some sort of "whimsical cake" - Something with different designs on it?!?! I just don't know!! The cake will be for about 10 people so I don't need a lot of cake. He does like golf but I'm not sure if I want to do a golf theme cake....
Maybe combine 'over the hill' and golf...make two cakes 5 and 0 and decorate them to represent a golf course through a graveyard with the tee and fairway on one 'end' and the 'green' on the other, with brown sugar sand traps...place a tombstone at the hole with an arrow pointing down or something silly....
Or, on the whimsical side, do each layer in golf 'colors' with different motifs - clubs, tees, whatnot with a hole on top.
Or, if he has a favorite type of food, do each level with some theme representing that - for example, Italian: one layer could be the red & white checkerboard tablecloth, another could mimic the basket of a chianti bottle, another could be different silverware items...with a big candle on top.
Good luck! be interested to see what you come up with.
In regards to the golf theme, check this out http://www.dianescakesandmore.com/groomscakegallery/golf-grooms-cake.jpg
If you're looking for something to incorporate the 50 check out my gallery http://www.cakecentral.com/modules.php?name=coppermine&file=displayimage&meta=allby&uname=mendhigurl&cat=0&pos=23 , and that's a cake that I did for my dad's 55th. If you need the template, I can send it to you.
