Has anyone used the wilton icing in a can? I have a sister who lives out of state from me and wants to make a cake but doesnt want to make icing and doesnt want to use like a DH canned icing.....is the wilton canned icing the same as DH or is it thicker?

I've used it. I find it really easy to work with. Some of the cans are harder than others. She would just need to squeeze the cans to soften them up. They do detail work really good. It is thicker compared to DH & other canned icings.

I used a can of Wilton icing once & it was really easy to decorate with. I agree, you might have to let it soften a little, but for canned icing it wasn't too bad...much better to work with than the DH canned icing.

Make sure she gets the small (I think 16oz.) cans - the big tub is not buttercream and will not crust!!! It's very easy to work with but like I said - it won't crust!!!

I like the Wilton for decorating but not for icing the cake with. It tastes ok but it is stiffer than dh or your other canned frostings. The chocolate Wilton is really tasty! It is a lot better than the plain white.

Newbie here.... so you guys never use wilton for the whole cake!! Ut-oh! That was all I have ever used. I thought it tasted okay. My next cake that I am doing for Easter I had already planned to make from scratch. I'll check the difference.

I know others who have used the Wilton to ice the cake with....it's fine for that but a bit stiff. Might want to try thinning it down a bit for the cake icing. As for making flowers and such with it, it is ok but I would rather make my own icing....Wilton will do in a pinch

huh! I guess it is kinda thick now that I think of it. Do you have a reciepe that you prefer for a crusting buttercream?

I use the Wilton recipe which is on this site along with tons of other great ones. Best thing to do is play with it and see which one fits your taste.
