Guidance With Buttercream Dots

Could someone please help me with the buttercream dots. Do you just pipe a mound and let it crust then squish it or how exactly is this look achieved? Oh, and how long would it take the icing to crust? I really like the simplicity of dots and can't wait to attempt them.
Here's an awesome dot cake done by KittisKakes. Doesn't it just look great!? In fact, thanks Kitti for inspiring me to explore this technique. I never really realized you could do them in buttercream. Kinda embarassing. ![]()
I agree with auntem outline your circle and then fill in! Maybe dip your finger in corn starch and smooth over because I fing if you do it with a bare finger it messes up the icing (after it has started to crust which I think is about 15 minutes) I hope that helps! Worth a try as I am very new at this myself!

Some of the character cake instructions say to pipe in areas then use your finger dipped in cornstarch to smooth, I don't see why it wouldn't work for dots ![]()
