brand fondant?

Hi everyone,

It's too inconvenient for me to go to a specialist cake shop to get a Orchard brand 3kg fondant (which is a lot fresher and softer, easier to apply). I am in sydney eastern suburbs and i closest shop to me is in camperdown and since I don't drive, the bus fare just to go there and back will cost me nearly $10 and being a stay at home mum, I really can't afford it icon_sad.gif

I have used the supermarket Orchard 500g fondant and it was rather hard. I have been told that becuase they have been on the shelf longer than those in specialist cake shops ( expiry date still ok).

What I'd like to know if that, should I buy the supermarket ones (if ok to use, how to softern the fondant? in microwave? how long? etc)
OR
would it be better not to waste my money in supermarket ones and best to travel that distance to get the 3kg one?

Can I get fondant by mail order? I assume postage would cost a lot since they are so heavy?

Where are the best places in sydney to get cake decorating things?

Hope fellow aussies can help answer my questions. Thanks

violet

I actually love the taste of ORCHARD... its not however the best to work with, it does dry a little quick and has a tendency to crack especially on corners.

Suggestions: s

Stock up when at the supermarket or order online... Orchard do ship... if you order over a certain amount they ship for free.

BAKERY SUGARCRAFT is in wetherill park... not so close to you but you can order over the phone or online.... they sell BAKELS fondant... easy to use, not a great lot of flavour and not too sweet.

HOLLYWOOD CAKES is in Kogarah but you need an ABN to buy from them and the only brand of fondant they have is CAKE ART.... requires lots of kneading before use and remains very soft and to be honest not a big fan of the after taste.

NANDAS CAKE DECORATIONS at Bexley sell to the public she has BAKELS AND FONDX and CAKE ART.... no wholesale prices though only retail.

CAKE DECO are online and are based in Melbourne... shipping is not to badly priced... no wholesale prices

CUPIDS in Newcaste.... online or over the phone. Quick delivery.

CAROLINES SUGAR ART... large range both retail and wholesale.. based in South Australia, can order over the phone but they do have a website. Scatter brains to deal with but quick delivery.

These are the suppliers I generally use.

hope this helps

C

I used Orchard when I was trying to make a fondant bow. In my opinion, it's cr*p. It tastes okay but it kept ripping and tearing and sticking and just wouldn't hold it's shape.
I just covered a cake in Bakels Pettinice and it seemed nice to work with. I haven't used any other brands, so I'm not much help.....

Yes- you can get fondant posted to you. I get everything through mail order.

Yes- Australia and the UK drive on the left hand side of the road....Americans drive on the right. I'm not sure about other countries though.

By the way, all those in the Northern Hemisphere.

Australia may look like it's always warm, but I can tell you that the last week in Melbourne, with no central heating has been very cold.

Cheers,
Fran

I haven't ordered any tins from the US yet.

The stores I use are:

Major Cake Decorations in Victoria Park ph 93625202.

The Sugar Smith in Maddington. ph 94935999

Cake TinznThingz in Balcatta ph 93451869

Petersens Cake Decorating Shop in O'connor ph 93379636

Major Cake Decorations have the largest range. They are the nicest too- very friendly. All of the above will do a postal order for you.
I also buy alot from ebay. There are also a few online stores that I buy from, but they aren't in WA:

bakerysugarcraft.com.au
cakedeco.com.au
gumnutcakes.com.au
