Just wanted to share this. TOday I wanted to make a cake for my co-workers. I was so thrilled with the ideas I got out of CakeCentral that I rushed into making MMF. Don't know whát I did wrong, but I ended up with a kitchen (and kitchen-aid) covered with confectioners sugar. ANd having to wash up the kitchen-aid bowl - what wasn't easy.

Than I decided not to use the computer idea, but to go for some 'easy' icing and some polka dots. Creating the icing went well, but putting the icing on the cake... DH wanted to see what I've learned on my workshop. After 5 minutes he pointed out 'that's too thin - you're to carefull'. Another 5 minutes later hé was icing my cake. Seems that plastering walls dóes teach you how to ice youre cake.

The cake has turned out beautifully - thanks to DH. But my confidence at this point hasn't...

Oh, I think those days will come and go. I had one myself this weekend. I made a mad hatter cake for a concert my boyfriend played in. The theme was "Out of Mind" and one of the pieces was actually an arrangement (for a chamber orchestra) of Purple Haze (Jimi Hendrix). So I figured a mad hatter cake in all different shades of purple would be awesome. Oh, where to begin....

First of all, every layer was too shallow - it didn't look nearly as unstable as I wanted it to look, which was a total bummer. Then, for some reason, my frosting just did NOT want to stay on my cake...it kept sticking to the spreader and lifting right back off the cake... icon_mad.gif not just lifting off cake crumbs...I'm talking cake CHUNKS b/c my cake was nice and moist (which I love, but makes it more difficult to ice with my crisco buttercream). So one corner of my middle layer literally ended up being 50% icing b/c I had to "glue" things back together and carefully shape with a VERY hot/wet knife. Then (middle layer strikes again) my MMF for the middle layer cracked on me like crazy when I unrolled it over the cake. I don't know what was so different about that one - I made all three colors the same way. I almost gave up at that point and thought about chucking the middle layer, but I am a tenacious gal. icon_cool.gif I took one of the other purple colors and figured out how to cover the cracks and VERY uneven folds with decorations (light purple stripes). I was so glad I was alone in the house at the time, because I temporarily became a lunatic - the concert was that night!!!!! I think the middle layer was cursed.

Anyway, in the end, the cake looked great. It was almost finished by the time my boyfriend and his mom came back. I had called once while they were out just to vent my frustrations and his mom commented on how great the cake looked and that she didn't understand what my deal was. (I love you).

So I guess all is well that ends well, but what a ride...

Believe it or not, plastering walls does give you some experience, and vice-versa. I plastered our kitchen wall and people can't believe I did it! I told them, it's just like a cake!

Hang in there...I think this weather is affecting our baking.

don't worry about it, it happens to the best of us!! Tip on the mmf, i prefer not to use it w/the ka as it seems to overwork the "dough". I only do it by hand and it comes out perfect everytime. (that's just my opinon) other's love the ka to make mmf. But try it all by hand you may be suprised! Good luck!!!

We all have days like that, practice, practice, practice, you will get there! Soon it will become second nature and you'll do it without even trying very hard.
