How would you have yours built? My DH is making one for me and hopefully sell a few. I'm looking for some input so they are designed for larger cakes. His prototype is 16" square, made out of hard woods and can hold up to 250 pounds so you could definately do a large tiered cake on one. So in order for them to be functional for cake decorating what would you like to see on a sturdy turn table? i.e. size, shape, etc.
I actually think the prototype sounds wonderful. I have something to run by you; do you think your hubby could build a cake plateau? I was thinking about something incorporating crown molding. I think it makes a great alternative to the metal ones.
Well he's a carpenter by trade specializing in trim so I'm sure that would be no problem to build a cake plateau.
You one thing I would do if building my own turntable is making it taller than the one I bought. Think about were you use your turntable and what height you like your cake to be at when your working on it. When I'm working I'm always bent over to be at the right height.
I also agree with cakes21, having it round on one side and square one the other for sheet cakes.
Mine is flippable (1/2 sheet cake on one side and I "think" 14" round on the other) and it's fairly tall so that if I'm sitting at the table and it's on the stand, I can get to the sides easily. It's not tippable, but I would be afraid to tip a cake anyway... mine would be the one that would slip despite safeguarding against that. You can buy those at my cake shop for about $30 and she has various sizes from TINY to this one, the biggest... made from MDF and has ball bearings for smooth turning.
