My First Cake And What I Learned
Decorating By Thistle-n-Bean Updated 7 Apr 2007 , 9:59am by johannap_73
This was my first attempt at decorating a cake, and let me just say...I'm hooked! I'm entirely self-taught from books and such, but I think with practice I'll get better.
This cake is made with four 8 inch layers - two of devil's food cake (from a box mix) and two from a Southern Heirloom cake (a scratch mix from my granny's recipe). It's iced entirely in buttercream, except for the chocolate eggs on top!
I learned several things:
1) A splatter guard (like you put over a pan of sizzling mince or spaghetti sauce to keep it from splattering) makes an EXCELLENT tool for tranferring layers!
2) Fill my icing bags with less icing. The icing towards the end got a bit too warm from the heat of my hands.
3) I really like basketweave, but I need to practice more!
Anyway, here's how it turned out!
great job! it's beautiful! all that chocolate makes me wanna take a bite hoping that a third of the cake ends up in my mouth all at once... ![]()
p.s. thanks for the tip on that spatter guard! ![]()
Thanks so much! The hardest part was not eating it, as I'm five months pregnant and darned if this little baby doesn't want some cake REALLY badly! I'll just have to wait for dinner at the MIL's tonight!
Your first decorated cake? Wow! All your piping looks great! How did you do the grass?

I'm not sure of the tip number, but it was the only one that looked like it might work, but I think it was 136 (I have the 55 piece tip kit from Wiltons). I just squeezed and "plopped" the tip all over the place - it seemed the faster and sloppier I went, the more realistic it looked! My daughter was just laughing her fool head off watching me.
you did a fantastic job....if you ever want to do something like this again that needs grass try tinting desicated coconut it looks real and it is realy easy also....once again fantastic job looks great...
