Store Bought Or Homemade Buttercream

I have noticed that some folks prefer to buy large tubs of buttercream icing instead of making it themselves. Is this a more cost efficient way to decorate if you have alot of orders to fill? And for those who prefer to buy, do your customers prefer this icing (or don't know it is not homemade? Thought this would be an interesting subject . . . .

You can make your own buttercream. There are recipes on CC. Most of these are made with shortening and they don't have any butter or very little butter. Real buttercream can be a little involved depending on the recipe. Wilton also has "buttercream" recipe on their site. And WBH has a few in their book. Rose Levy Birenbaum has several in her book,"The Cake Bible."
I do make my own buttercream icing, and have been trying the different variations I find here on CC. Just was curious as I had seen a post by someone last week saying that her customers prefer the store-bought icings she buys at (I think) SAMS Club, and someone else had mentioned the icing brand Bettercream.

I use to buy my buttercream by the tub at my bake supply shop. It was really light, not to sweet and easy to pipe with. It got a little pricey at times. Well I just got a Kitchenaide and decided to make my own. Using the receipe that the bake supply gave me. Well let me tell you homemade is the best. I think. You can just taste the freshness. I now make my own and it's cheaper for me to make.
I've never tried the bucket kind...but I don't sell any cakes, though. I make my own buttercream. ![]()

It's really simple and I'm not sure if it's the same as the Whipped buttercream receipe on here. I make 7lbs at a time. I have a 6 qt. kitchenaid.
4lbs. Drivert Sugar
1c Hot water
I mix those 2 for about 20 mins
then I add
2lbs. Hi-ratio short
1tbl. sugar
1tsp. butter-vanilla extract
Then mix again for another 20 mins.
