When you are doing a tiered cake and put a dowl down the center for extra support how do you get it attached to the bottom support?
I'm doing a 3 tiered cake that will have foam board between the layers. The cake will be placed on a 16" square wooden board covered in fondant. So if I put the dowl down the center I know it won't go through the wood so how do you secure the cake to the wooden board?
The dowel keeps them all in line but doesn't need to be attached to the bottom board.
I set the bottom cake tier on whatever boards it's going to be on and stick that to the bottom board by using a bit of Karo syrup as "glue" between the cake stand/board and the bottom tier cardboard, if that makes sense. Or just set the bottom cake tier right on the base board, if food safe.
Also check out logicpic.com for their support system--I like it a lot.
I had a similar situation with a prom cake I am making. this is what I did. My bottom tier is 16in and I am using a 22 in wooden round board covered in gold leaf. I got one of those 16in cake boards that are covered in foil and like 1/2in to 1in in thickness from Micheals. I then got some of those velcro strips and attached it to the bottom of the foiled cake board and to the tope of the goldleafed wooden board. then I put my 16in cake on the 16in foil covered board frosted, decorated the cake etc. I treated that foiled board as if it were just a piece of the cake, its like you just added an inch of cake to the tier. then I attach that tier to the wooden gold leaf board, added all my dowels and tiers like I normally would. Then I took 1 long dowel that I sharpened to a point and inserted it all the way though. It stuck into that foiled board not the wooden board. and the velcro holds the bottom tier to the board to prevent slipping during transport. the best part is is that you cannot see the 16in cake board because it is frosted and decorated along with the cake
