Is there a kit for the fondant & gum paste class? Just curious as I haven't seen one yet. What type of items are needed? I want to use the HL 40% coupn to get the more expensive items prior to class.
Thanks,
Kelley
As was said above yes there is a kit. HobbyLobby and other stores will not start teaching the class until May so the kits may not be out on the shelves yet. I know we didn't get them at Micheals until about 3 weeks before the class was due to start.
Here is a list that I am passing out to my students so they can start buying, using coupons to save them some money. ![]()

To help with the cost of some of these items. My instructor had the spiral roller for us to try. I only used a bit of color from the multi pack so I thought that was a waste. I used my white and mixed in color for what I needed. The 20" roller was useful but not needed. I bought it, but I like my regular rolling pin better - easier to handle. For the silver cake base, my store was out so I just covered round cardboard with foil - they are going to be covered with fondant anyway.
I used coupons for the premade gumpaste and the fondant. You can do it without the fondant smoother - it is nice but you can smooth with out them and get them later if you really like doing fondant. I shared with some of my class mates the mini foil cups because you only need a couple of them along with the larger cupcake cups - or just use your regular baking tins.
Talk to your instructer where you are taking the class, they should be able to tell you exactly what you need and what you can live without.
Thank you for asking this question. I was just thinking about signing up for this class that starts tonight. I had no idea the extra stuff that would be needed. I just finished course 2 and am really enjoying the classes. I want to continue and take the next two. But I can not believe all the extra things that you have to buy in addition to the course kits. I almost wish they would just put everything you need in one box and just charge you more for it.
I took the course recently, and I used MMF for most of my fondant work. I had bought the multi-colour pack, and I didn't even use it. You can just tint your fondant with your paste colours. In the course, they show how you can tint fondant using already tinted fondant, but you can colour your own however you like. I did buy the gumpaste, however, as this is a new medium for me. I just used the 40% off coupon from Michaels for each item, (the kit, and the gumpaste, and one box of fondant), buying each one separately on a different trip.
Making and using the MMF saved lots of $$, but I found that you need to use less of the gumpaste when you mix the two together. Instead of half fondant, half gumpaste, I used about 2/3 MMF and 1/3 gumpaste. It worked the same (half and half is too dry).
Instructors are required to recommend only Wilton products, but I tend to stray from the beaten path sometimes...
I respect that, and I didn't make a big deal about using a different fondant. I think it depends on the instructor, but mine is awesome and didn't care that I brought my own instead of buying it.
I would also recommend the cutter/embosser tool. It's not expensive, and it comes in really handy.
I hope you enjoy the course! I did!
ps - for rolling the fondant, I use my cake divider mat that came in the Course 3 kit, it works just fine. And I use my wooden rolling pin from home, it worked the best for rolling larger amounts of fondant. I also have the small (9"?) fondant rolling pin with the rubber rings on it, as it is great for the smaller amounts. Again, I picked it up with the 40% coupon, but it's not that expensive, either.
Hi, does anybody know if there is a way to get the book without taking the class?? I really want to take it but I don´t have the time right know, as matter of fact, I enrolled and had to drop out
Right now you can not purchase the book for the course. Michaels is the only one teaching the course and the books come with the price of tuition. I am not sure abotu Hobby Lobby, but I know you have to buy the books at Joanns. You would be able to buy the book from them when they start teaching in May.
It costs approximately 80 dollars to complete the course if you don't have any previous supplies. Our instructor suggested making one cake between 2 people if you are taking the class with a friend or family member to save money on total supplies. You both will still need to buy the kit, but can share all the other necessities, if you are concered about cost.
Okay let me go back and be a little more specific about things. If you have taken C3 you may have already bought some of the items, so you might be able to check a few things off the list.
You will need the items in the kit. Again you may already have purchased some of them, so it may be a matter of buying the additional pieces.
If I was taking the class I would probably buy the 5lb box and I'd think that would get you through the class. I do know that through lesson 1, 2 and 3 they call for 2 boxes of fondant. Now of course you will probably have some left over, but I'm not sure the exact amounts.
If you have made homemade fondants and do not have a problem with making it, and you have a good workable consistancy then I can't see it being a big deal with you bringing your own. I always suggest my students use the Wilton in class so they can get use to the way it should feel. And since I don't make MMF or other ones if they have an issue with it I may not be able to help them.
With the colored fondant, you can color your own. I would say though that the book is set up using the precolored added to things so if you are coloring your white fondant with the color pastes then you will need to adjust the amounts for what you will need.
I have told my students to buy two packs of the same color and if you plan ahead (don't use your favorite color in Lesson 1 and 2 you should be able to do the final cake without buying more boxes. Also if you wanted more mutted colors you could split the color packets in half and just use and equal portion of white. You will end up with lighter colors and may need more white before it is over, but you could save on the other box.
You shouldn't need more than the one box of gumpaste and I'm pretty sure you will have some left over at the end of the class.
I'd buy the piping gel in the tub as it is a better buy. And if you have taken the other classes you may already have it on hand.
The cake bases do cost more, so if you are looking to save, then buy one package of the 12in cake boards. You will really only need 4 of them (2 for each cake) and can use the others later. Also you will need atleast 2 of the 8in cake boards.
My personal preference is the Roll & Cut mat because you do not have to worry about the creases and it has square measurements on it as well. (Hint, it will roll around the 20in rolling pin and store nicely, just roll it with the markings out, so when you use it it will lay flat and not curl up on you.) You can use the cake dividing wheel from the C3 Kit though so if you already have it and don't want the other that is something else you don't have to buy.
Do you have to buy the 20in rolling pin? No. If you already have a good rolling pin at home, then that will work fine. I've had students use both in class.
I do like the 9in rolling pin for little items and the rings do help when you are rolling smaller amounts. Can you get away with not having it? Sure. A note though, it is cheaper at Walmart than Michaels.
I've bought a package of cookie sticks that I am handing out to my students. Some other instructors may do the same. And that is an item along with the baking/bon bon cups that you could see if others in the class want to get together and buy and split up to save you money.
I do really like the cutter/embosser, and think it comes in handy.
If you already have some nicer paint brushes (not the plastic ones) then you won't need to buy the brush set.
The tapered spatula comes in handy for some things in the class, and I like using it as well when icing cakes, so for me it is a tool I already owned.
As for as the shimmer dusts, these are used to accent the carnation and the daisy, you don't have to have them for the class and can always purchase them later on.
I'd wait to buy the spiral rolling pin, it isn't something you have to have, and your teacher may have one you can try out to see what you think about it. I do like the textured rolling pins, but if you are looking to save money this is one of those items you can cross off the list for now.
If you bought the 101 piece tool box you already have a fondant smoother. If you don't have one then it is an item that helps but that you can also do with out if you need to.
You will do two cakes in the class, and the only buttercream you will use is to ice the cake. Everything else is done with fondant/gumpaste.
Yes this is one of their more expensive classes, but you may already have some of it or decide you don't want to buy it. And if you shop with coupons you can save yourself some money.
I can't say 100% but I have heard that Hobby Lobby will have a 40% off coupon for Wilton items this coming week, so check their website Sunday to see if they have it.
My Michaels will met us use the printed out Hobby Lobby coupons though I have heard some don't, between them and the Michaels 40% off I never buy anything big for regular price.
I just finished taking it, and the most expensive thing I bought for it was the actual fondant and gum paste. I wish I had bought the big box of fondant wtih a coupon, but I got the smaller one and had to buy more later. I also bought a box of the colored fondant and am glad I did so I didn't have to mess with the food colors in class. Our instructor actually handed out recipes for MMF and rolled buttercream but said she at least wanted us to start wtih Wilton so we'd know be familiar wtih the consistency and feel to look for it we made our own later.
I did not get the spiral roller or whatever it's called. Our instructor had one we all could use. We tried it on our fondant-covered cake boards and none of us liked it. I used my regular wooden rolling pin (handed down from my mother!) and that worked fine. I did buy the mat and really, really like it. And the cutter/embosser is kind of essential.
Our instructor also gave us each one of the cookie sticks and she brought a glue gun in to glue our regular cake boards together.
It's certainly not cheap, but I had never done anything with fondant before...had just finished courses 1 and 2, so for me it was worth it. I probably spent more on course 1 since I had NOTHING to start with.
