Over Cooked Cake

I am trying to attempt my first cake for my daughters birthday tomorrow. I went to bake the first cake for the layers. I made a chocolate cake mix and baked it in the 10 in wilton cake pan. On the pan it said to use a whole cake mix (6 cups of batter) and to bake it at 350 degrees for 30 to 35 mintues. I went in at 25 minutes to check it because it smelt like it was burning. I pulled it out and it smells burnt but the middle is still slightly runny. Any suggestions on what I need to do would be so great. Thanks in advance!

Next time bake at a lower temp than what is stated on the box, I do 325 or even less. I would also probably recommend that you bake two cakes and split the batter between the two pans.

I bake mine at 325 degrees for about 40 - 45 min.

maybe try turning your oven down to 325 and baking for a little longer. Also for a cake that size maybe use a flower nail or heating core. they make sure that the center bakes evenly with the rest of the cake.

Thanks for the tips. I baked the next one with a flower nail in the middle and turned the oven down to 325. It turned out perfect. Now I'm working on trying to assemble. I think I got myself in over my head a bit, but it's been fun learning to do it.

I was just going to suggest a flower nail ... also use bake-even strips to keep the outsides moist.
