Hi-- I feel like I've read somewhere that you can take your vanilla buttercream recipe and add melted chocolate to it to make a great chocolate buttercream.

Does anyone do this or know the proportions? I guess I can play around with it but if someone already knows.. I'd love to hear your advice! Thanks!!

You can add cocoa to it. That's what I've done. I'm not sure about the candy melts, but I'm sure it would work!

Hey Elvis--
I just add Cocoa powder to my buttercream recipe. Sometimes I may need to add a bit more milk or cut back some on the powdered sugar.
Then if it still needs more of a chocolate tste, I add a can of dark chocolate fudge frosting. May be cheating but it works for me.

i don't know what recipe you're using, but to Martha's Italian Meringue Buttercream, I add 6 ounces of melted/cooled Callebaut bittersweet dark chocolate (but candy melts would still work) and 1/2 cup of dark unsweetened cocoa powder. I omit the vanilla.
