Any feedback on the airbrushes you can get at Michaels?
My birthday is coming up and I want an airbrush set. I have a coupon for Michaels and noticed that they carry them. Anyone have one from Michaels? What's your opinion of them? I'm just starting out, so I don't need anything too fancy, but something that will do well if I really get into it. TIA!!
The air brushes at Michael's are usually made for spraying paint onto model cars. They used canned air and have small jars that attach to the nozzle. These are absolutely great for spraying an entire cake with luster dust, but not worth beans for detail work like a compressor type airbrush.
I have both. I like the canned air one because the jars hold so much more than the little cups and they are much easier to clean. Luster dust has a tendency to clog a regular air brush. It clogs canned air style too, but the set comes with a wire to clean the tip.

p.s. The canned air can be somewhat expensive, so always remove the air hose and keep using those coupons!
My apologies for the long post, but...
My original airbrush was an Aztec that I purchased from HL. Still works very well. I agree with what Sugarflowers said...for the most part. But, I never used canned air with either of my airbrushes. For my Aztec I purchased a Testor mini-blue compressor and absolutely loved the results.
The main reason I upgraded was because I missed the airbrush I used to have when I worked at a bakery and the one from HL functioned differently. The Aztec is a single action (meaning that the amount of spray was adjusted by turning a dial on the airbrush, and that the trigger simply released the color). I use this airbrush strictly for luster dust now. I found the jars bulky and inconvenient to work with, their only advantage being able to custom mix a large amount of color to cover a larger area of cake. However, my Aztec has a color cup that I used instead of the jars. If you are going to be using it in limited amounts, one of these airbrushes should work fine for you.
But if you are going to use one extensively...
I prefer my Magic Mist airbrush because it is a dual action gravity feed (just like the KopyKake brushes so many cc members have). Dual action means that the amount of spray is adjusted by the amount of pressure you put on the trigger, and gravity feed refers to the cup that is built in on top of the airbrush to hold your colors. I find this to be a great advantage when changing colors often.
HTH!
Thanks for all your info!!! I'll see what the prices are at Michaels and if it doesn't look like significant savings, then it won't be worth it. I've been looking online and found a dual action one at airbrushcity for $133 that includes the compressor. I'll have to think about it.
Thanks!!
were can i purchase one of this magic mist or the Aztec air brushes and how much do they run price wise.
My Magic-Mist was purchased at a cake decorating supply store in Austin, TX called All-in-One Bake Shop. That is the only place I have ever seen one. It is a professional model, and the complete set: Airbrush, Compressor and starter set of colors was about $300 with tax...yikes!
The Aztec airbrush was about $50 at HL, (that was before I knew about the 40% off coupons that they run about every other week). The compressor I used with it, the Testor Mini-Blue (that really is what it is called!) was about $100, also without a coupon. So, at about $150 for both...if you used the coupons, you could probably purchase both for around $100...not a bad price at all for a starter set.
However, "mdutcher" commented on the dual action from airbrush city (they are on eBay also). I was having problems with my Magic-mist a few weeks ago (long story ran luster dust through it), and I looked at this one on eBay. It looks like a great value! If I ever have to purchase another one that would be my first choice as far as the price goes! You can also find the airbrush alone for under $50.
Well, I decided not to get one at Michaels. By the time I would have bought the sprayer set then the compressor, it would have been twice as much as the one I saw online. Even with the 50% coupon, it would have been the same, so I'm gonna try my chances online! Wish me luck!
I got mine from HL but I have the Iwata airbrush & compressor ( compressor says it's for cake decorating). I used the 40% coupons. I have used those coupons at Michael's too. I'm just learning with my airbrush, but I have been happy so far and was told it was good one.

I just bought a airbrush online. You want a top gravity feed & single action. May sure it's for cake decorating not hobby painting. Good Luck. Longlockes
