Hey everyone. I am studying up on making 1st wedding cake for my sister. I have never made gumpaste flowers and want to make some for her cake but she lives in another state and I would need to premake them probably. Do you think they would transport well in carry-on luggage if well packed or should we just go for fresh flowers?

They are brittle and very fragile. I would put small little squares of foam rubber between each petal, wrap the flower in foam rubber sheeting and tape with painters tape so it will be easy to remove, and line the box with bubble wrap, more pieces of foam rubber between the flowers so they are packed in tightly and don't move around. Then a layer of bubble wrap over the top of the flowers and seal the box well. The thing is, most gumpaste flowers have a piece of floral wire in each petal. I have no idea if that will set off the alarm at security.

Thanks for the tips. I didn't think about the metal issue. Maybe if I practice enough I can get good enough to make them faster so I could do them a few days before her wedding. Are fondant flowers more durable or easier to do?

I have seen them for sale on Ebay. You might order some. See how they survive usps and copy the packing methods. It might be a little bit of an investment though.

Here is one example I found, by searching gumpaste flowers

I have handcarried gumpaste calla lilies from FL to Asia. They had small wires in them and security did not even open my bag. Of the 90 calla lilies I brought with me, only 1 broke. I made sure they were well packed in a box with lots of bubble wrap and foam.
