I am an hour away from the nearest cake decorating classes so I am going through the self-teaching phase myself. There is a college about 45 minutes away that has a pastry chef program as well. So for now, I am learning on my own and will hopefully try to take some Nick Lodge or Collette Peters courses when I can.

I bought the "Cake Decorating Made Easy" online program and it helped me too. They also have the DVDs.

My best friend and I are teaching ourselves also. I've bought lots and lots of books. Ranging from Colette Peters to Textbooks like the one that Toba Garrett did. I also have a few pastry chef textbooks coming in the mail, I can't wait to get those! I usually buy my books on amazon from private sellers for almost half the price amazon sells them for. That's how I was able to get those pastry chef books. I have my best friend to do all of this with and bounce ideas off of. If you have a friend that's interested you can do it together. IF not, maybe you can find a CC'r that is close enough to you that you could get together with to practice. All the great books aside, you have CC! This is the best, and cheapest form of instruction you'll ever find. There are decorators on here ranging from the home baker that does it for hobby to culinary students, to pastry chefs and other professional decorators! You can't beat that for resources! Make a plan, practice lots, and if you get discourage, see your fellow CC therapists immediately! LOL. Good luck!
God Bless,
Kimberly
PS-You can pm me anytime. I'm also fairly new and haven't done many cakes yet, but i've learned more than I can tell you on CC.
