I am making a small cow, cowboy hat, and cowboy boots with fondant. I have made all the pieces, and they are not dry yet. I will not be decorating the cake they go on until tomorrow. So...

My questions:

Do I assemble the cow now, or wait until it's on the cake?

What do I stick the pieces together with? Piping gel? Water?

When do I 'paint' the details on...now or when the pieces dry?

What do I use to paint? I was thinking edible food markers OR will watered down food color work?

Thanks for your help!!

Now everyone is different..but me I assemble before i put them on the cake, I use water to stick small pieces together and then butter cream for larger pieces, I have painted before and after dries, but i color the fondant the colors i need if possible, faces and eyes have to be painted, I like to use fod coloring to paint, i have used the markers they are ok but i have trouble with them. Im sure others will give you their input also.

I find that some paste or gel colour mixed with a little bit of alcohol (just enough to make a paint consistency) works best. The alcohol evaporates off and the paint dries very quickly!

I also assemble figures before putting them on the cake (though I haven't made many). It gives the pieces a chance to dry and bond together, so they are sturdier. When you attach the legs give them a little twist to help the two fondant surfaces adhere to each other (a little tip I got from Aine2!)
