Well three questions really.

I printed out the pattern last night and tried my first pair. I had mixed half gumpaste and half fondant together, would it have been easier with 100% gumpaste?

And secondly what do you stuff the toe with, I got one nice and rounded but the other one is bumpy, looks like the baby had bunions. And how do you neaten off the edges, yours all look so perfect.

My Mum and Husband knew what they were okay but both agreed with me that the toe and the edging around the soles need work.

Are you using cutters? or are you cutting free hand. I use a cutter, and for the sole i cut as thick as the cutter will allow, then i have a nice base to work the toe and heal off of. I use a pasta machine to roll the toe, cause i like both shoes to look alike and i am unable to do that with out rolling through the machine.

At anyrate, i roll to #4 or 5 on my machine. Then i cut the toe, and add a large cotton ball (dip in cornstarch first) , you do have to fluff the ball first so that its not too lumpy. As far as the neatness on the edges, the higher base should take care of that for you. If you look in my photos you will see a couple of cakes that i have used these on.

Oh the other thing you may want to know is that i use cutters by JEM they are the red ones for making a life size bootie, and i haven't tried them with fondant i use straight gumpaste.

Thanks Peg, I was using the template on a tutorial that somebody directed me to. The shape is right but I'm just not getting the edging around the sole correct but I think now maybe I'm rolling it too thin. What you said there made sense. I also was thinking of moulding some fondant into shape and inserting it into the toe of the boot wrapped in clingfilm, so I can get it back out, to try and keep the shape but I think a lot of my problem is trying to get the sides stick to the sole and having to poke at it for too long and that might be solved if I roll the sole thicker thicker. Back to the table tonight.
