What Type Of Kitchenaid Mixer Do I Want?

Slightly off-topic: For those of you who are making giant batches of pwd sugar based frosting, why not just buy the ready made tubs of frosting? Seems like it would cost the same and save a lot of time and energy.
I have the 5qt KA and never have a problem with dry ingredients flying everywhere. Just don't dump everything in at once while the mixer is above level 2.
DH gave me my KA for Christmas a couple of years ago. Mine is the hinged one. The only complaint I have is, when I make MMF, the bowl gets wedged in the grooves that hold the bowl in place. If I ever wear this one out (lol) maybe I'll get the lift-up model.
Mine stays on the counter.
I have the KA 600 and LOVE IT! I just got it about a month ago and it has made my holiday baking soooo much easier! It's the best! I was worried about having to take the attachments off before taking off the bowl but it's actually not a big deal.

a) cost
b) taste
c) icky, sticky, gooey
d) too! thin
I've used it in a pinch for the base coat...but even then added powdered sugar to stiffin' it up.
I have used three different KAs. Two at the bakery I worked at for a while, and one at home that belongs to my roomate. Both mixers at work were the bowl lift type but had different size bowls (and I think different watage, but I forgot to check). One has a 6qrt. bowl, but doesn't work as well, so I imagine its lower wats. The other is a 5qrt bowl I think. The one at home is a tilt head (250 wats. not sure but the bowl is pretty small). Clearly, power is important, but I would choosea bowl lift over a tilt head not matter what! I didn't have access to a pour guide with any of them, but for me it was WAY easier to add ingredients, scrape the bowl, really do anything with the bowl lift becaue I could just lower (and raise) the bowl in a second where as I would have to remove the mixing attachment to tilt the head back. It's really no comparison in my mind. I'm not sure what someone else was talking about with it being hard to remove the mixing attachment on the bowl lift... there's no nead to tilt the bowl or anything with the ones I've used. Maybe it was typo? I'm not sure unless KA has drastically changed the design. Anyway... that's my opinion. I think any KA (or any stand mixer for that matter) would be better than a hand mixer, and maybe a lot of it is personal preference, but I would NEVER buy anyting other than a bowl lift mixer with a very high watage... Oh and BTW, consumer reports had a review of stand mixers not too long ago. I'm sure you could check it out online or at your local library. Hope this helps!
