I made my first batch of cream cheese icing tonight (happened to make orange flavored) and I'm not really sure what I think of it. It seems like a lot of people use it but I really don't like it all that much. Am I weird?

Yes, I usually use a regular, really sweet BC recipe. But I wanted to try something different and I do like cream cheese and also like the typical carrot cake type cream cheese icing. But today it seemed like I could really taste that tang of the cream cheese, even after I added extra powdered sugar. Maybe it was because it was at room temperature as I was mixing. I did like it better once I had it on a cupcake and popped it in the freezer for a few minutes.

What does everyone else think? It just seems that this icing is too popular for me to be this ambivalent about it.

I love cream cheese icing (with nuts)! But not on just anything.....on Italian Cream, Red Velvet, etc.....

I love cream cheese icing - the tang of the cream cheese contrasts really well with the rich sweetness of the cake! HOWEVER, I only use this on carrot cake and red velvet cake, I don't care for it on regular cakes. ALSO, I hate sickly sweet buttercreams. But don't worry if it's not your cup of tea, everyone has her personal taste preferences! icon_biggrin.gif

yeah, I like cream cheese icing, but only with certain cakes. It doesn't taste right with a lot of things. I only use it with WASC (for a raspberry flavored filling), and cover the rest in regular buttercream. The flavors balance themselves out in that, but with my other favorite recipes it's not that great.
