Sorry if this has been discussed before but I did a search and I can't find the answer....

What type of chocolate cake recipe can use for the Wilton 6" sports ball pan? I usually use Rose Levy's chcolate butter cake recipe but I'm thinking that cake could be too tender to hold up well as a ball... Am I right? Anyone have any recipe suggestions?

Also, how would I stack the ball on top of a 9x13" sheet cake? Do I dowel through the ball and into the sheet cake? or just put the ball on a board and put support dowels under the ball?

TIA

The only cake that I've had success with for the sports ball pan is with a pound cake. All of my other cakes (dr from a box) are still too soft and end up flat on the bottom.

I would put the ball on a board with dowels underneath and a long dowel through them both.

Good luck.

I have used the ball pan many times before I knew anything about cake decorating, but I don't recall using chocolate batter though. I always made sure to put the half laying down and the upper part on top. I also sliced off a bit off the bottom, so it would lay flat.

If you are having a problem with your chocolate box mix. I would try adding 1 packet of dream whip and practice with that. Or how about a tablespoon of cake flour or 2 added and an extra egg? I have never tried this, so they're just random ideas. Is it possible to wrap the ball pan with the magic strip?

I would do as you said and use a cardboard round as a support and dowel support that in the sheet cake. I would also take a skewer and dowel through the ball 2x. The skewer is narrow and sharp at the end and easy to clip off with some dykes. I like using the skewers because they are so thin and already sharpened and don't take up any cake.

Good luck!

Can't help with the cake mix. When I use the ball pan I use a box mix and just reduce the oil down to one TBS to make the cake firmer. When I made my bowling cake (in my photos) I put the ball on a round piece of foamcore board and set that on top of the cake with dowels underneath. I then doweled the cake through the middle of the ball because I had to transport it to the party. No way I would have taken it in the car without the center dowel! HTH and good luck!! Tina
