Wow- I just bought my first luster dust! I bought it at a local cake shop and I thought it was totally worth it! I realize now that I paid way too much (4.95 for 2 g) I am going to go and order some more from this site! Way better price! And supporting CC too!

I just brushed it on the petals of gumpaste roses with a paint brush. What else can I do with it? The brand is Linnea's. Can I mix it with alcohol and paint it on BC or fondant? Can I mix it in the frosting to pipe on the cake?

When we left the cake store I told my kids that I was going to go play with my new toys...my DD says "are we going to look at toys?" I said I just bought my toys!!! She was soo confused!

Yes, you can mix it with Everclear or Vodka, also lemon extract but because of the lemon oil it takes longer to dry. I just put a small amount of dust in a paper cup and add the alcohol a few drops at a time, stir well and keep adding till it is about the consistency of unwhipped cream. Too thick and it will look globby, too thin and it will dry streaked. Then paint onto the fondant or gumpaste. I have not tried painting buttecream, it will probably work but I don't know that I would want to actually eat it. I save empty dust containers just for mixing the dusts. The nice thing with the luster is if you don't use all that you have mixed up, just leave it to air dry and it will return to a powder and you can pour it back into the dust container. Never wastes any of it, it's too expensive to throw away.

THis is why I just luv CC! So many new things to discover and play with! As long as I've been doing cakes, I'd never been exposed to this awesome tool! Just bought some a couple of weeks ago and have been playing with it during my slow season. I haven't mastered the wet-painting yet, but I luv dry-brushing it on the outer edges of my (crusted/dried) BC rose petals!

I use small empty baby glass jars, this way, if I don't use all of the lustre paint, I just screw the lid back on and keep it for the next time. Saves a lot of money and I don't waste the dusts

I keep some made up in the jar to myPraval sprayer so I can add a sheen to a finished cake in a jif. I love it, such a versatile product.

I just bought some for the first time last week! I did a football helmet with it and painted it on. I had to do 2 coats because I put it on too thin and it was streaky, but the final product looked awesome!!!
I'm totally hooked and can't wait to work with it more often!!!

I will add a tip that I tell everyone about because it is so cool. If you mix nu silver with super pearl and add alcohol for painting you get a bright sterling silver or chrome look. If you add super pearl to any gold dust you get a bright shiny gold. Use about 1/4 super pearl to 3 parts gold or nu silver, mixed with enough alcohol to get a latex paint consistency. I got this tip from a customer service rep. at Creative Cutters in Canada, best tip I ever had. Here is a shoe done this way in silver and a cup in gold.

What is the best type of brush to buy for using Luster Dust? If you can I need brand names or something specific so when I go to the store I know exactly what to look for.

Thanks,
darkchocolate

I think any brush labeled "artist" brush would work. You can buy them in sets that have different sizes (wide, andled, pointed, etc.)

So, I have to ask!!!! Do you NEED to mix the luster dust with alcohol or can you use brush it onto the gumpaste in the powder form??

I just bought my first one and am dying to try it. I made the gumpaste shoe yesterday (I didn't turn out too nice but it was only my first one!). I want to dust it to get it all shiny but now I'm not sure if I have to do it with the luster dust in a "liquid" form...?

You can use it dry, but I find you waist more that way, the best way is to make a paste the way shirley explained.
Any brand, I have used ck but now I use the one I can find here in my country, I don't think that matters

I'm one of the few diehards when it comes to drydusting. Take a dry brush and dip into the lustre dust and tap, then dust dust dust! If you look at my photos, the chocolate heart cake and the monogram cake are both done using this technique (except for the monogram proper, which was dried colorflow painted with lustre dust mixed with confectioners glaze.)

I've been having the same problem, the settings like to adjust themselves...icon_confused.gif Must be a server problem or something. icon_rolleyes.gif

Here's something that I tried. I pulverized alittle non-toxic childrens sidewalk chalk and then added a bit of Super pearl to it...it was the perfect silver!! It's on the bride cake I have posted on CC..on the little building. I will be doing this with other colors I am sure in the future. Hey, it's cheaper too, and tastes the same.

Just a thought.... icon_wink.gif

My mother left me a set of individual salt sellers. They are the perfect for this. They are short, squat and heavy cut glass so they don't tip over.

Sunflower has a website (don't recall what it is offhand) but their stuff is easier to find at distributors. I know Scott Woolley sells some of their colors, you can try GlobalSugarArt.com and I know we can get it locally at our cake store. Try going where you normally buy Lustre dust and ask if they sell the new Sunflower colors. Hope that helps some! icon_biggrin.gif
