Ok, the staff at my Micheals is clueless. I signed up for the Gumpaste and Fondant course starting on Thursday and the lady said I only need to bring the student kit - no other supplies. And when I called and talked to another lady I was told the same thing (but neither really knew what they were talking about!)

Now, I highly doubt that they would be supplying the fondant and gumpaste etc, so I am hoping that one of you wonderful CCers has taken the course and has a supply list!! Is there a book as well as the student kit?

I hope the instructor is better than the retail staff! icon_confused.gif

I enjoyed the class - but if you took all 3 of the wilton courses, a lot of this is repeat. I did like learning to do the flowers and using gumpaste.

I am self-taught. I took one beginner cake decorating course through a local school board which I found repeated alot of information I knew so I skipped doing the Michaels classes. However, I am excited about making the flowers!! I've played a bit with fondant and never with gumpaste so I'm ready to learn!!

Thanks for all the info everyone icon_biggrin.gif

You will enjoy the flowers. My carnation needs more practice, but my daisy's turned out good. My final cake I made for the class is in my photo's. I wish they would have shown more flowers. My instructor showed us one that wasn't in the book - a calla lilly.

When I took the class that first night I needed a 8" round cake too. We covered the cake circle and the cake with fondant.
My WIM said that we could use a fake cake, and that's what I would do if I were you untill the last night when you make your final cake. Cuz the rest of the time you don't really finish a cake. You cover the cake the first night and learn so other stuff the the next week you have to bring a cake and you put a drape, and a hankerchife and some ruffles and that's that then the third week you don't need a cake. so I would stick with the fake cake for the first two weeks.

I didn't cover a cake the first night, I think we covered the cake board the first day.

get michaels to give you the number to the instructor. I am now in course 3 and will gumpaste next, but our instructor brings some stuff. I called her the first time because I started late in the class 1 and she was very nice and told me what to bring.

You should not be covering a cake the first night--just a cake board, so no cake needed. The second night is when you bring a cake and then again on the last night.
