Ok so I'm new to this site and cake decorating. I saw that my local craft store does Wilton Cake Decorating classes over a 4 week period. The registration is $15 but then I also need to buy supplies. I wanted to ask if anyone has taken these and how expensive does it become to buy everything needed for the class???

Thanks icon_smile.gif

If you have no supplies, you will be paying a bit more up front to buy everything you need. If you will be taking it at a Michael's, Hobby Lobby, AcMoore or JoAnne's, start collecting the coupons to get even more of a discount on the supplies. I teach at Michael's so I can speak about them--as a student, you do get 10% off of the items that are needed for class.

But it is also only as expensive as you make it. When I first started I went gung-ho and spent some serious money and bought anything and everything. Heck, I still do because there are so many things out there! icon_biggrin.gif

I'm starting Course 2 tonight, and like you, I had never done this wonderful craft before. I have spent about $50 during Course 1, but also bought some optional tips, etc. HTH!

I agree, when I took the first course I dropped a lot of $$$$ but I am in my 3rd course now. I am just buying the kits now and oh baking supplies. It is a lot but I really like it so I am ok with it. icon_lol.gif
The best thing for you to do (besides using the coupons) would be to go to Sam and buy A LOT of powdered sugar and couple big tubs of Crisco. It may seem like a lot but you will be amazed how quickly you'll go thought it, especially if you make practice cakes.
You will have a ball. Good luck and happy baking. thumbs_up.gificon_biggrin.gif

I didn't spend very much on my classes. Michael's always had a "deal" of the month. Either the supply kit was free, or the class was free. Or I paid for the class & got the kit 40%off (with coupon).

You need a few extra supplies, but I only got what I HAD to have. Then after the class was over, if there was something else I thought I'd need, I'd get it w/coupons.

There is a basic kit for each class and they are only like 25-30 dollars and with your 40% off coupon from JoAnns or HobbyLobby, it's even cheaper! There are a few things that you will need that aren't in the kit ... like a turntable ($10.00 at Wal*mart), cake boards, etc.... I bought one of the Wilton cake totes that already comes with stuff in it with a 40% off coupon and it seemed like a great deal!

I think the Wilton classes are invaluable. There are many ways to decorate, but their way is a "cheap" way to take a class to see how much you really are interested. Just like this website, I found it very addictive. For once, I'm doing something for me that I LOVE! I spent (d) a lot of money, but it is my hobby and I enjoy every dollar of it. In my opinion, money well spent. I sell my cakes, so eventually, it will all pay off. I buy a lot of my supplies at Joann Superstore as they take ALL coupons from competitors and take numerous ones at one time as long as they are not duplicates. Their stuff is a little more expensive than AC or Michael's, but since you can use multiple coupons it ends up being cheaper. HTH.

I as well was wondering what the 'supply list' will cost. the 1st class here is 25.00 plus supplies. I called joanns for the price of the supply list, but the instructor was not in and no one else knew the answer. eh.

I would say expect to spend anywhere from $40 up on supplies for C1. C2 has less 'extra' items needed out side the kit. C3 and the F/GP Course will have the addition of fondant/gum paste to the course kit as well as a few other things you may want to purchase.

Definetly if you are taking it at Michaels use the 10% off discount (remember you have to tell the cashiers you are in the class) and use 40% off coupons when you can. That will help save you some money.

But in the end how much you spend will depend on you, after the basics for the class you can spend a lot more, or an average amount.
