Forming Color Flow Icing?

I'm using the 2005 rainbow plaques pattern for a road on my sons birthday cake. It says to tape the pattern and wax paper onto the curved surface of a cake pan or on cake side formers. What's easier and what are cake side formers. I can't seem to find them on any searches. Help please.

You just need a curved surface for them to dry on, so when they are dry they will fit against the curve of the cake.
