so i just contacted satin ice, and i asked howmuch would the price be if i had to buy a large amount. she quoted me 40lbs of satin ice for $100. not including shipping. now i had 2 questions..... 1. can you dye white satin ice to any color just like fondant? 2. am i getting ripped off?

That is a good price for 40lbs, I would ask how much for a case, someone here buys it buy the case and it is pretty cheap.

Well, at the bakers kitchen it's 72.99 for 20 pounds and at sugarcraft it is 71.69 for 20 lbs so it sounds like a really good deal to me. This is without shipping.

Kats - that is actually a very good price (even without shipping) for 40 pounds and yes, it is dyable. Satin Ice - when properly stored - can last up to 6 months - even longer - with not problem. As you use it, just keep the unused portion in the same plastic it comes wrapped in and in the same bucket and make sure the bucket is shut nice and tight and you will be fine. I have had a 20 pound bucket since end of November and use it as i go and the remainder is still great anda fresh.

yes you keep it in the same container. I have some fondant that i have had for a WHILE now and its still good. Its firm because i added cmc to it...but all i need to do is re work it and its fine.
wow! thanks for all the replies. well i contacted satin ice, and they said i would have to pay for a case, and shipping seperately. they're in new york and i live in california, and they said that the shipping would be $32 dollars, and the satin ice is for 40lbs for $100. so total would be $132. yesterday i saw this post on making your on satin ice. now.... i dont know about you all but... i'm a young pretty busy mom. how do you guys feel about buying it vs. making it on your own. are the results the same? is it a dramatic convinience on buying it rather than making it and saving some money? any tips would be helpful!
First and FYI - 40 lbs is the case size - 2-20 lb buckets. And that is their minimum order.
Now, let me tell you what I learned through vast research before I started buying directly from SatinIce.
Although the price might be a slight bit lower at some places, it's the shipping that they grab you on. I used to buy it from an online vendor, but the shipping came to $17 for one bucket. I paid less than that to ship an entire case to my location, including the COD fee. I live in Pennsylvania and they are located in upstate NY.
Here are their terms:
They do not take online orders. You must call them directly.
They do not take credit cards.
The first order ships COD, which has an applicable additional fee of $7.00.
After that, they invoice you, and you pay when you receive the invoice.
The total of my first order was $115.63, including the COD fee. Consecutive orders were $108.63.
My advice is that you call them back and ask if they can give you a quote with shipping and COD to your location. Then call other vendors and ask the same.
Please post in this thread what the results of your research is for purchase and delivery to your location.

okay i will. i mean i understand the shipping cost. but.... i just dont want to make it. i heard great reviews from everyone here of satin ice, and so i thought maybe if i buy it, and always have it in stick that would be great. so i will shop around and post any updates!
try this store in LA, someone else from here buys from their. Not sure if they sell fondant, some items are not posted to sell online. Lot of other great ideas to buy.

Also your first order has to be 40# which I blew though in a couple of months. I can order just the one bucket at a time now. I call they send it to me and invoice me later for it.
It is good for up to a year from packing date. I am almost through my 20# bucket and that took about a month.
So it is like a fondant fairy drops it off on my step!

I would love to make my own, but time is $$$ so I need to start buying mine. I am tired of making my own mmf....so very tired of making mmf. I was told about pettince, any one heard of that before?

I have been using Pettinice fondant, like it, like the taste. Tried Satin Ice as well. Like them both, Pettinice is cheaper.
I pay $36.95 for a 15lb. bucket from Pfeil & Holing (www.cakedeco.com) in NY. Order on Tuesday, arrives on Thursday. They only charge actual shipping costs.
Made MMF - broke 2 mixers, have a rotator cuff shoulder injury, won't make it anymore. Like the taste of this better anyway!

I just bought a package of pettinice today and couldn't wait till Friday when I cover a cake with it! I opened it and tasted it...Im a hater of fondant usually...but this actually tasted pretty good! I will have to wait till it is on the cake to know for sure!
www.satinfinefoods.com will give you info on how much you need per cake size LOOK UNDER HANDLING INSTRUCTIONS. satin ice rolls out MUCH thinner than any other fondant i've used. and is consistant, i will never make my own again. (unless i am in a serious pinch of course)
www.intotheoven.com sells the 20lb bucket for 49.95, and they have 2lb, 5lb, 10lb also. shipping is based on your zip code, i pay 11.41 for 20lbs (plus a few other small things added) and around 18 for 40lbs. thats the best deal i've found.
it will last for 6-12 months, keep it well sealed and it will stay fresh. you can color it easily using gel, paste or powder colors.

wilton is more expensive! to get 4 of these packages at approximately 15-16 each, thats over $60 for 20 lbs...and ......eeew!
