Hello Iowa decorators!!
Just wondering if anyone can tell me where you get your decorating supplies? Are there any good shops in Iowa? I'm 15 min. from Cedar Falls, and there isn't really anything around here. Hobby Lobby, Wilson Restaurant Supply. But that's about it. Any cake shows anyone knows of? Any information would be greatly appreciated!

I'm near Washington, and I have only found Walmart or Hobby Lobby. Otherwise, I have to get them online. There's a Michaels in Cedar Rapids, but that's too far for me.

I have a Wal-Mart in town but otherwise travel 30 minutes to a Hobby Lobby or Micheals. (which can seem like a really long trip with three kids)
I have heard of a really good shop in Spencer but that is over an hour drive too.

I'm in Central Iowa, close to Ames and not too far from Ankeny, too. I get majority of my supplies from Hobby Lobby and then also from Michaels.

I don't know of any cake shows but I would love to find out if you come across any of them!

I live in the QC and I get mine from Michaels and some time Hobby Lobby. Our Wal-Marts don't have much. We also have a Trevor True Value in Moline, IL that has a lot of different cake stuff. But I guess that is a little too far for you Sorry I couldnt be more help. But you can check little hardware shops like that, you might be surprised.

I am near the Q-C also and the best places are the True Value hardware stores. D77 told you about Trevors, but there is also one in Davenport (last I checked they still carried some) And another in Muscatine. If you have any true values in your area check them out.

As for cake shows, the ICES convention is in Omaha this year. Check out their website. I am hoping to go this year since it is so close.

I am hoping to get a DOS together ( it will probably be late this year or early next year since ICES is this summer) So maybe we can get everyone across the state (and maybe the midwest) to come and have a weekend of it.

I lived in Urbandale until around 6 years ago and I used to go to a store over by the State Fairgrounds in Des Moines....the name is eluding me right now but it was on University.....Clayton's Arts and Crafts was the name....don't know if it is still there but had tons of pans and supplies.....much more than Michaels etc.

I'm also in Central Iowa near Ames. Where are you from ruralepicure? You can PM me if you like. The store someone mentioned by the State Fair Grounds was Clayton's but it isn't there any more. I have a Walmart in town and a Hobby Lobby 15 minutes away as well as Michaels in Ankeny, about 45 minutes away. I didn't realize ICES was in Omaha this year Leily, what are the dates? I went to ICES when it was in Des Moines years ago. I really enjoyed it!

DOS is Day of Sharing.

I get most of my supplies either at walmart or local discount store here in town.

I do get my boxes from Trevor True value in Moline or if my volume warrants it from Great Western Supply on 53rd in Davenport but they sell by the case there.

Or I order from countrykitchen as they are a 1 day UPS ship time from me.

I would love to get together for a day of sharing. Or lunch with any of the QCA area gals would be great. I am ususally down there once a week.

Ho fosterscreations. Thanks for the info. Now I know what DOS is. And I am very up for that!! I would love to get together with my fellow decoratiors and just talk cake! Leily, if you're thinking of planning it, please let us know. Sounds like a ton of fun!

fosterscreations - if you are looking for volume buys check out brp box shop. They are located in clinton and I have contacted them before and you can go and pick up boxes there. Just have to call to make sure someone is available to help you out as they are mainly a warehouse.

As for the DOS, it was kinda put aside this summer b/c I was layed off at the beginning of the year and found a new job, and trying to make sure I could continue my apprenticeship.

I only have one year left of schooling so I am hoping to work on something for next year instead.
