i just sold my first cake yesterday to a friend (former co-worker). it was an 8-inch yellow cake with strawberry pie filling and i did the rainbow design (first cake in wilton course 1). it was for her 12 year old grandaughter that just had a birthday.

when she asked me how much i wanted, i said i didn't know, i really didn't know what to charge her... since she was a friend and all... she gave me $10 plus $1 tip... so i got $11 for a double layer filled 8" cake. i know this is not enough to make anything on... i didn't expect it since it was my first but what do you think would be a good starting price? they sell these 8" cakes in the grocery store for $15. i'm not looking to make a huge profit on this right away but a little would be nice since I just lost my job and have my first baby on the way. anyone have a suggestion?

I would start at $25.00 & go up from there depending on ingredients, size and complexity of the designs.

Best wishes to you and ''baby''!!

OK, Hope I am not being too harsh. If people want a supermarket cake let them go for it. You shouldn't sell any cake for less than $2.50 a serving. I charge $3 for a cake like the one you described. As it is, by the time you do all the shopping, baking, and on an on you are probably not making minimum wage. Tell them to go and fill thier tummys with all that hydrogrenated oil. T

I'm not sure what to tell you to charge ...it really depends on area, but never charge less than the grocery stores!! Congratulations on your first cake order thumbs_up.gif

Congratulations on your first cake sale!! And congratulations on the baby! It is very hard pricing cakes. Be confident and understand that everyone will have an opinion about this, but only you can set your price. It's hard when you're just starting, though, so I understand your dilemma. Especially if it's friends or people you know. Good luck!!!

I charge $30, for a 9"in double w/ buttercream, so......even though yours is an 8", it does have a filling, I would charge $30.00. I did a cake for a neighbor and she was more than fine w/ this price. Again it depends on the cost of living in your area. If you live in Cali or a metro area you could probably get more than $30.00. Good Luck!!!
