For the most part, I've been using a small straight edge spatula, but I think I need to get either a bigger one or one that is angled. Any suggestions?

Definitely an angled one. Also one of the drywall scraper things is great for smoothing BC.
I love my small angled spatula. No matter how big the cake is, its the only spatula I use.
