This is the cake I did for my daughters 2nd birthday. I used MMF for the first time. It's not perfect but I think it turned out ok. She loved it! I was just wondering if I sold this cake how much you all think I could get for it.

That's cute! I too have made a Backyardigans cake with MMF figures for my son's birthday. There are two problems when the question of "selling" it comes up:

1. Those little suckers took me for-ever. Like an entire evening EACH. I would have to charge $20-$25 for each one of them to make it remotely worth my time. And while people may *love* the figures, they don't want to shell out an extra $100 for you to spend 10-15 hours on them.

2. They're copyrighted and it's illegal to sell them, which fortunately makes point #1 moot. icon_wink.gif

You did a great job icon_smile.gif

I love it! And so do my kids..5 and 3...they love Backyardigans. Well done. BTW - I don't know what could get more perfect.

The cake is absolutely precious! Great job! My son would go nuts over it. I am with kelleym about selling them though. I don't think you could get enough money for them to make all the effort worth your time... And I am new at this, but I didn't realize you couldn't make copyrighted figures on a cake for someone....So it's just if you accept money for the cake? Do the people that do it anyway just bet that they won't get caught or what?

Very very cute cake. When it comes to cakes with modeled figures as kellym mentioned it takes a lot of time. Right now I´m working on a Dora The Explorer and Diego cake with modeled figures and it will take me a week to do them. Of course, I can´t work on them for a whole day and that´s why I split the work. Anyway, if I had to charge my cake I think they would call me crazy. I guess it requires a lot of practice to do them pretty fast. So, probably I´d charge for your cake 40-50$. Great job!

That's exactly it -- you can make it for free, but you can't profit from a copyrighted image. That includes if they "reimburse" you for materials. The safest thing is to make it a 100% gift.

Yes, people do it and hope they won't get caught (or they just don't realize). The penalty is $50,000 for each infraction, so it could financially ruin a lot of people if the "wrong person" saw their Mickey Mouse cake. Totally not worth the risk.

Thanks for all the replys...It took me a whole week to make all of the figures so if I did sell it I would have to charge a lot and I am sure no one around here would pay that. But ol' well I am just glad to be done with it. But then again I really enjoyed making them. My daughter loved them and she even loved it more when I let her dig in! icon_razz.gif

Good work. I too made a Backyardigans cake. Only I used fondant this time. I did a Miss Spider and used MMF for that one. Had a hard time with the MMF drying out and crumbling. I must have done something wrong. I got "reimbursed" $65.00 for each cake.
If it is illegal to sell the copyrighted cakes then how do Decorators sell cakes made out of the Wilton charachter pans? I have seen many legal bakeries selling them. I know the grocery stores can use the plastic figurine cake toppers, because they are "approved" to do so. How would a leagal bakery go about getting "approved" to do the same?

Wilton character pans are for "home use" only, it says that somewhere on the insert.

Bakeries selling licensed character cakes legally either have a licensing agreement with the copyright holder, or they're using "deco-packs", which you can buy in cake decorating stores. I *think* it's legal to sell a cake using a deco-pack. There was recently a good discussion on this in the business forum:

First of all I can't believe that was your first time working with MMF, you did an excellent job and I would have guessed you had been doing it for some time!! Great job, I can see why your daughter loved it!!! Sorry I am still learning on how much to charge for cakes myself!!

I at first had problems with the MMF for figures. It kept drying out and crumbling on me also. I remembered some where on here that when it did that to add a little shortening....MISTAKE! In the end I ended up with a huge mess. So I kept trying different things and this is what I found works the best. Make sure you keep your MMF warm. When it started to cool I would pop it in the microwave for about 7 seconds and I could keep working on it. So try that and see how it works for you. Thanks everyone for the comments. I really enjoyed making this cake but as I went to bed that night I just wanted to cry. I know it sounds silly but I had worked so hard on it and it was gone in a matter of minutes. I talked to my mom about it (she bakes cakes also) and she said she felt the same way with her first wedding cake. Ol' well...the kids sure did like eating them.icon_smile.gif

Thanks for the tip. I too feel like crying when I hae worked for weeks on a cake and it is gone in seconds. Or even when they throw away the un eaten potion of the cake. I think what a waste. I normally try not to eat the cakes that I am really proud of (which doesn't happen to often) it's just a mental thing for me. Like I am eating my child or something distrubing like that.

Did you have a book on how to make them, or did you just do them without any help? I would love to learn how to make things like that, but don't know where to begin. I still have to put plastic toys on cakes!

Wow! That turned out soooo cute! I love the Backyardigans! I don't have kids, but every now and then I watch it anway - such a good kid's show! And your figures turned out spot-on! Fabulous job.

If you were able to sell them you should get $125 for that cake, but since you can't, your family will just have to be the lucky ones! icon_biggrin.gif

I looked off of her story book, "Here Come the Backyardigans!" When in high school I took art all 4 years so I worked with clay a lot. I took the skills I learned from that and just applied it to working with MMF. Just remember when you are working with it to keep it warm. Good luck!

Janet2007,

I think you just received the biggest compliment ever. I just showed my daycare children your cake and they wanted to know if they could play with it and if I was going to buy those "toys" for them. They really loved it when I told them that it was a cake. They started fighting over who they each wanted to eat. Great job. Then asked if I'd make one for them. We'll have to see about that!! LOL
