Update On The 50Th Anniversary Cake/restaurant That Said No

Thank you for all of your wonderful ideas and suggestions with my dilemma! I was really depressed that I couldn't decorate my parents' 50th wedding anniversary cake, but thanks to all of you, I will (hopefully) be bringing a 2 tier cake to the restaurant.
I decided to go to a favorite bakery and asked them to make me the cakes and fill them, but no icing. I ordered cakes and fillings that we have had from them before and I know they are good. I will pick them up on a Saturday morning and ice, stack and decorate them and bring the stacked cake with me to the restaurant the following night. I am going to have a receipt from a licensed bakery and I still get to decorate the cake.
Honestly, it works out maybe even better this way. I have not decorated many cakes and certainly have never made a stacked wedding or anniverary cake before. I have researched the techniques I would like to use on this cake and getting the cakes already baked and filled will take quite a bit of pressure off of me so I can concentrate on doing the decorating as best I can.
I already told the restaurant I am bringing a cake from a bakery and they are charging me $1.50 pp serving fee. That's fine because then they will be happy that they are making money on me, I'll be happy because I can decorate the cake myself and give it as a gift to my parents, my parents will be happy because they will have their party in a restaurant they love. If the restaurant questions the cake (which I don't think they will), I will have proof that a licensed bakery made it. If they want to scrape off the icing, they are welcome to do so before serving! LOL!!!!
A HUGE thank you for all your help. Now I will probably post a ton of "how to" questions before April 9th!!!!! ![]()
I'm so happy that you are able to decorate the cake for your parents and it is legal; you have met all the restaurant's requirements ![]()
Can't wait to see your pretty cake ![]()
Actually it was padawn71's idea about just getting the cakes and then decorating them myself.
Don't know that I would have ever thought of doing it. Didn't even know it would be possible.
When I went to order them like that, the ladies behind the counter just kind of looked at each other and shruggedd their shoulders like "well, I guess so, why not?"
It sounds as if you have the perfect solution AND peace of mind. Will be looking for your pictures soon.
Best,
Congratulations Projectqueen, it turns out best for everyone, including the servers doing extra time on the cake. "They will get a bump on their tip with the $1.50 pp charge." Have a great time. And 50 years, what an accomplishment in today's society!!!!!
Good thinking, it always pays to outsmart someone!! ![]()
So glad you found a solution to your problem. I hate when I have big plans for something and someone tries to squash them
But sounds like you are going to outsmart them afterall. Good luck with the decorating and Best wishes for many more wonderful years together for your parents!
I just got done reading your original post. This is actually what I am going through right now. I've done so much research on the design and tested different recipes all for my son's Baby Dedication and lo and behold, the dumb golf club won't let in cakes unless from a certified bakery. I live in Lancaster County, where everything is closed on Sundays, so I would have to pick up the cake myself and bring it in on Sunday anyways. I asked the chef how would he know, should I bring in a receipt, or something? He said, "Oh, I'll know if it's from a bakery just by looking at it." This infuriated me, almost like he was challenging my cake decorating skills.
I like the idea of buying a plain cake and decorating it yourself. I'll have to look in on that. My DH is worried that they'll kick us out and we'll have to take our guests to McDonald's and eat cake in the parking lot. ![]()
