dont worry honey!! i just had my first wedding consult last week and i was nervous too! all you have to do is let them see how passionate and exited you are about cakes. you have to get them excited! make them feel like they are your one and only client! for future reference, since you dont have an extensive portfolio, i put together a full presentation on that tri fold project board, and i include ribbon and color choices, floral arrangements, prices, ect. anything to make it more visual for the client, not everyone has a creative mind like us decorators! dont give them time to focus on the fact that youve only done one!! just go in there and be yourself!!! RELAX!! PM me and Let me know how it goes!! ![]()
GOOD LUCK!!!
thanks for the support Mandi. I Will let you know how it went.Keep your fingers crossed for me.
I'm in the same position right now. I have two colleagues at work who are getting married in the near future and want me to do their cakes. They know I do good cakes...I bring them in all the time. But, I haven't done a wedding cake in 5 years! So, I've made up sheets with pictures of other people's cakes. I've laid out the pictures very nicely and made it look very professional. I am VERY clear about the fact that these are not MY cakes! I was careful to choose only cakes I am comfortable doing. No stringwork, no topsy-turvy...you get the picture. I am offering them SUGGESTIONS based on my comfort level. Thney've had a variety of the flavors I do on a routine basis, so I don't have to worry about a tasting. At this point, I'm just trying to guide them to choosing something that's not going to stretch me too far.
Good luck! Let us know how it goes!
I had a consult last fall for my first big wedding cake (4 tier cake in my pics) and I brought all my Wilton books with me. She'd already seen my portfolio at the market and it only had 2 small wedding cakes in there. I had an idea of what she wanted so I marked different cakes so she could have a visual of different size structures of this cake and whatnot. She seemed to be happy with that.
I just have to step back and remember that my only competition around here is the grocery stores and their books are full of cakes that were made for a studio somewhere by some really good decorator, not the decorators in the stores. I might as well use Wilton pics or other pics as a visual until I have more cakes in my own portfolio![]()
Ok so the groom came by tonight. Tasted a small decorated cake loved the taste. Looked at my pictures & loved my prices. Plus I used visual aid for him he was havong a hard time picturing the cake sizes. So I grabed my heaxogn pans & stacked them onto each other. He said he had to talk to the bride but I am 95% sure they are going to go with me. Said I should know something by tomorrow. Keep your fingers crossed I will let you know as soon as I can.
