I want to do a castle cake for my 3yo. I have zero clue where to start. I have seen some beautiful pictures in the gallery! Is it hard to stack cakes? DO you think that if i stacked ice cream cones end to end and then added the pointy-ended (is that the sugar cone) at the top that would work? I can do basic icing... but haven't tried anythign else. I swear i need a step-by-step. Has anyone done a simple, nice castle. I see lots of people used fondant for accents, but i don't really want to do that. If i can get away with tubs of frosting and my frosting kit i think i'll be okay. I have my 1yo cake to make as well..and i'm pg...so i don't want to "get in over my head!" Sorry for the LONG post, but would appreciate ANY help. Thank you! icon_smile.gif

Here is a link that will help you out:

Tracy has some wonderful tips on her pages and all she asks is:

Please Note: The cake pictures posted in these Photo Gallery pages were baked, iced & decorated by me, Tracy Brown. You are free to make any of these cakes yourself, either an exact copy or with any changes you see fit to make. You can also print out a copy of the picture for your own reference. HOWEVER, you are not free to use the photos of my cakes on another website without identifying them as mine, with a link back to this site.
That's just not nice.

Go for it I did one when I was a newbie and if I can do it you can. I used veg.cans for towers with cones on top. You will never know if you don't try. thumbs_up.gifthumbs_up.gif

Mine was not the best and probably the 2nd cake I ever did. I baked and 11X15, cut it in half and stacked in upon itself. (I knew nothing about doweling at that time, but I didn't have to take it anywhere.) I used cupcakes on each corner with a sugar cone atop each one. My DD was impressed, so that's all that mattered. I know that you'll do a great job. Good Luck!! thumbs_up.gif

When I need info on how to construct, I look to the library for cake decorating books. I'm a visual person too, so it helps to bring these home and study them to figure it out!

If you can't find a book that may help you at the library, check out the bookstore. Even leafing through a book at the store helps to get some ideas. Our library system doesn't carry Debbie Brown's books, so it's my only option! I think she has a castle in one of her books icon_smile.gif

Hi!

The castle cake I did had fondant-covered paper towel tubes for turrets. You could buy fondant to do those. The Wilton fondant tastes bad, but nobody would be eating them anyway!

Here's the pic of the one I did. It's not as fancy as a lot of the ones here at Cake Central.

I used sugar cubes around the edges of both the round and square cakes. I dipped the sugar cones in thinned icing and rolled them in pink sugar (hopefully you can get yours straight. Mine are so crooked!)

I just went to amazon.com and did a search on Debbie Brown...

If you click on the book cover to search inside, both show the construction of two styles of castles. It's a start!

I think you could do the cakes that Gails Goodies suggested. Especially the first one. The directions are very easy to follow.

If you want to add princesses, just use the little mini dolls that are in the toy department around the tray. I've also seen cakes where they put stickers of the princesses faces in the windows (You should cover the stickers, front and back, with contact paper first, I think)

I'm sure your 3 yo will love it!
