Is there any way to salvage fondant after you have placed it on an iced cake?

You can remove it.... however if it has ANY crumbs on it or coloring from the icing, then unfortunately it can't be reused... If it's only icing that has stuck to it (and color isn't an issue), then yes, you can redistribute that back in the fondant, knead it well through and it should be fine.
