Have any of you made a "baby block cake" any words of wisdom before I attack this cake?

When you do the blocks it will be much easier if you keep the cake chilled for every step... From cutting to icing the cakes. I did several thin layers of buttercream and stuck the cake in the freezer between each layer. It really helped me keep the edges somewhat sharp. I have a picture in my gallery of blocks I did for a cake.

Good luck!!

Thank you for responding...I think that I will take your advice and try to keep the cake cool when I am working on it and ice the cake in layers....your block cake is amazing!! I'm a newbie - I hope one day I can make cakes like you!! icon_biggrin.gif

I just did a baby block cake last weekend but forgot to get a picture....Ahhhhh.The lady showed up at my door at 10:30am and when I asked her name and what cake she was picking up (I had 6 go out that day) she said the baby block cake ...and I nearly died!! First I had it written down as due for Sunday so I was lucky that I was 90% done.I put on the few extra decorations and out it went!!! It was one of my best but no pictureicon_sad.gif
Tami is right though..it is much easier to cut and decorate when it is cold.

Oh Kiddie - that is so sad not to have had a picture!! When I was taking my class....my instructor told us to always take a picture so I think that it was drilled into my head!! I have a picture of my 1st cake ever...I think I've come a long way!! icon_wink.gif

I baked the cake last weekend b/c we got a TON of snow here so I baked it for something to do so tonight I will just have to decorate it. It is frozen so I should be okay. I just hope that it is easy to cut!!

All of the baby block cakes that I have done are 6" square 2-layer cakes. I got the idea from a Wilton Yearbook, 2000 I think. Doing it this way eliminates the need for cutting and chilling, etc. Of course, if you do several blocks, it's a lot of cake. I tell my customers that each block serves 8-10 and many have ordered up to 6 blocks.
