I was wondering if anyone has ever painted a laminate countertop. Seems like I've heard of it being done, but I'd love to know how to go about it and how it looks afterwards. Also, does it last?? I wonder if you would need to seal it somehow, with a coat of poly or something??

I'm in the midst of painting my kitchen and den....we removed a wall between the two and now that they're open to each other the walls all need to be the same color. I'm also painting my lower cabinets, but once that's done the countertops will really stand out...and they won't coordinate at all. They're just laminate, but the color is a speckled blue, gray & white with a little black in it. My new color scheme is khaki walls, white trim and upper cabinets, with my lower cabinets and 'accent' color being a deep chartreuse-y, apple green color. All my wood furniture is being painted ebony(black), and my curtains are black and white. Couch will have a khaki slipcover and black/white patterened and green throw pillows. I know all those colors sound kind of crazy together, but I think it's gonna look pretty neat once it's all pulled together. I'd like to paint my countertops black or charcoal and do a faux finish on them to resemble soap stone, sort of. Does that make sense??

This gives you a better idea of the color scheme I'm talking about...minus the gray background, or course....lol.

If anyone has any ideas about painting the laminate countertops, I would appreciate any info you can share!! Thanks! icon_biggrin.gif

ok i may be wrong but im pretty sure on an episode of trading spaces they did this. if you go to lowes or something they should eb able to telly ou what products to use. I know ont he show they used a special primer i think they may have sanded a little before applying it. then there was a special paint as well. apparently the smell is alot stronger than regualr pain so you have topen your windows and wear a mask. i will check around the net for how tos for you.

Hey...thanks!! I thought I remembered seeing it done on one of those shows...lol. The info on DIY.net is helpful, but I'm not sure what they're talking about with the 2 part epoxy...I know what it is, but they just don't give too much detail. I wonder if that's what you use to 'paint' it the color you want?? hmmmm...must do more research! lol I figure the primer would have to be something like KILZ...the odor is horrendous, but it works...we've used it before on other things. I was at Lowe's last night, actually, and the lady in the paint department didn't have any idea what I was talking about. Maybe I should just go back on a day she isn't the one working that dept., lol. icon_rolleyes.gif Any info you come across, Susan, would be awesome!! Thank you! icon_biggrin.gif

Debbie Travis did it too! They looked like granite when she was through. I don't know the name of her show, but she's on HGTV!
