How To Keep Cake Fresh?

I have to make a cake ahead of time for an event, but I am not sure how to keep it fresh.
Do I freeze it and put icing on it later? or do I put the icing on it and freeze it?
How do I prepare it for the freezer?

I asked NEWTODECORATING this yesterday and she said that she sometimes make the cake, fills it and puts a crumb layer of icing on it and then freezes it. She did not recommend freezing it with all the icing and decorations b/c the colors will probably bleed.
