what about a sheet cake ....

with an Easter lily offset to one side

and a hummingbird flying at the opening of the flower.

could be done as two FBCT or two chocolate transfers.

link to coloring page image similar to what I described:

You could make one out of g.paste or fondant & gumpaste. If you had a stencil/cutter, you could make a flat bird, paint it, and stick wire in it and stick it in your cake. I guess it depends on what shape cake you plan on making. You could also make a BCT or choc. transfer.

Check those bins full of plastic stained glass figures at Hobby Lobby or Michaels. You know, where you melt the colored plastic in the form to make a stained glass piece? If you can find a hummingbird, you can use it like a stencil to make an impression on your cake. Then, just fill it in.

Hawthorne Hill has 3D hummingbird gumpaste molds.

Hobby Lobby has a mold with hummingbirds, trumpet vine flowers and leaves in the molding clay section.
I bought one but haven't tried it yet though. My friend uses them all the time for decorations. She fills the molds with fondant, lets them dry and puts them on her cakes. Beautiful!

Have you thought about CTs? The could be set on BC flowers. I have a picture of dragon flies and bees one that way. There's a pictue in my album.

weird. I had a request for hummingbirds for this weekend also. I'm thinking of trying gumpaste with it and if that doesn't work out, then do a FBCT or something of the like...

May I suggest what Doug said except use an artificial store-bought bird from Michaels attached to a wire hovering over a Lily (either made from gumpaste/fondant), fresh or artificial. I think the vertical dimension would be interesting and your grandmother would find it entertaining.
