How Do You Clean Up Luster Dust On Chocolate Fondant?
Decorating By DesignerCakes Updated 3 Apr 2007 , 4:00am by Hula_girl3
I made a huge mess painting some appliques with champagne luster dust on a chocolate fondant cake. I tried cleaning it with a q-tip and Everclear, but the gold specs just buried themselves into the chocolate fondant and it's impossible to remove completely.
There is so much of this luster dust used on this particular design that I am afraid I'd never get it all off. I've completed all the work and it's still showing up despite my best efforts. I wish there were a tutorial on how to best apply it to fondant, and better yet, how to clean it off effectively!
Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Ginger
I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but I don't think you can clean it off. The luster dusts are really pervasive.
My best suggestion is to take a piece of scrap fondant, put some gold luster dust on it in an amount similar to the problem areas and to then gently dab some cocoa on it with a soft, dry brush. It may pick or mask some of the shine of the luster dust and make things more acceptable to you.

Thanks so much for responding. I figured there wouldn't much I could do at this point, but your suggestion is definitely worth a try.
Thanks again!
Sorry but I'm a little confused, are you trying to get the dust off the aplique or the surrounding chocolate fondant? Is that fondant smooth or textured?
I want to clean it off the chocolate fondant. As I was applying it to the appliques, there were moments when the Everclear would evaporate very quickly and the mixture returned to it's powdery stage. It then quickly fell off the brush and all around the chocolate fondant, just outside the appliques (of course!).
hummmm I've never tried everclear. I only use rum since thats whats they buy for me.
Well my suggestions would be to use a fairly stiff yet soft brush that is soaked in the alcohol and then kinda pick at the cake to get them off but this will take awhile.
When i make a bigger mess I just go strait for the papertowel soaked in rum then wipe it like crazy, always changing the sections to keep the stuff you lifted from getting back on.
If all else fails well then get some Cocoa or Mushroom luster and paint over the chocolate to help mask it.
Good Luck
