I want to do a 9x13 cake with a light house on top. And I thought waves would look nice on the sides but I'm not sure what would be the best way to make them. I was thinking maybe a leaf tip or a petal tip. Also what about rocks. What would be the best way to make those?
Any imput is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Usually for waves, I just "swirl" the icing with my spatula, haven't really tried it with a tip.

As for rocks, you can actually purchase candy rocks in some areas, but they could always be made from fondant or MMF.

the first thing that came to mind was using the back of a spoon

I agree with gmcakes - swirling the buttercream is probably the way to go, just make sure you put some white buttercream at the tips if the waves and where they are breaking against the rocks for a realistic look! I'd make the rocks out of candy clay or fondant (coloured) if you can't buy them.

Thanks for the tips on the waves. but I've never used candy clay or fondant. and I don't have the things to make fondant this weekend. So do you think if I piped the rocks with a round tube and smoothed it. maybe using different shades of black and grey it would look all right.

you should be able to make rocks from tip #12, or one similar...depending on the size you want.

I think you should still give fondant rocks a try...just make them out of marshmallow fondant..........can't you get marshmallows and powdered sugar???? They look so great out of fondant...I have a cake in my pics. the one with the mushroom if you look there are large rocks on the bottom by the waterfall and some smaller ones around the top of the waterfall they're all fondant and were sooooooo easy to make and in person at least, they looked very realistic!!!

Your rocks do look very nice. The whole cake looks really nice!
But the idea of fondant scares me. If I did make it I wouldn't need very much for the rocks could I store the rest or would it dry out?
Thanks,
