I saw on a web site of a local bakery that they are in need of a cake decorator. They said that experiance was preferred but would train the right person. They said flexible hours. I have a regular 8-5 job Mon-Fri and told the lady this on the phone. She said they could probably work with that. She said it's Thursdays, Fridays (their long haul day) and Saturdays. It's called Cakes by Karen. She said that Karen would be in tomorrow, but her daughter is in today and I should come in and fill out an application sometime. I am TOTALLY going to jump on the possibility of the option. I really want to learn more and am so excited at the possibility of seeing how a bakery is run!

Anyone have any tips on how to make myself more desirable icon_wink.gif ? I don't have a lot of pictures of my recent cakes because my camera is on the outs and the people I have done cakes for haven't given them to me yet. icon_sad.gif

Definately list every miniscule little thing that you know how to do with a cake, roses, FBCT, Fondant, etc. That would be a major plus for them in hiring you. Also listing trust worthy, dependable and willing to work long hours is an eye opener for them too. And don't leave the references area blank! Good luck! thumbs_up.gif

How exciting! Your cakes are beautiful - and it's obvious that you have a passion for it. Just let it shine! Show that you're willing to work hard & learn anything they need you to know....and let your passion speak for itself. Good luck!!!!

Trying to get those pictures of your recent cakes wouldn't hurt either icon_smile.gif.

What an opportunity! Good Luck! Unfortunately, I don't have any advice from personal experience, but I checked out the photos you have posted in the gallery and you've got a lot of talent to bring to the table, so my suggestion is to take in whatever photos you have and, like Reenie said, list everything that you can already do. Also, as sgmaluv said, let your passion speak for itself. If Karen sees all of this, she'd be silly to pass you up!

make sure you read the fine print if they have a contract for you to sign, as it may have a 'do not compete' or cannot open a business within so many years or miles' clause in there, just in case you where thinking of heading that way at some time.

Thanks for the tips.... I will definitely read the fine print Sweetcakes, thanks for the heads up!

So I went and talked to the lady and filled out the application. I think she was interested, but she was kind of hard to read. She said she wouldn't be needing anyone for a couple of weeks at least. I told her about my 9-5 job and asked if that would take me out of the running and at first she said most likely. Then I filled her in on the fact that my summer hours mean I get off at 1pm of Fridays, and so I think she saw more of an opportunity. I told her I was willing to work long hours and whatever it took for the experiance. She said that in a couple of weeks, when they were ready, she would maybe call and see if she could make the hours work, or get me some hours. Honestly I don't remember exactly what she said. But it was kind of like....I'll call you in 2 weeks, but then she back tracked a little and mention if she could make the hours work. So I'm not sure. I guess we'll see.

When she asked if I had any experiance, I told her that I took the Wilton course 2 and that I have been doing quite a few cakes lately. I showed her my "brochure" looking sheet that showed some of my cakes with descriptions. She didn't say too much about it. In fact she didn't seem to have the type of personality to show enthusiasm for much, but she did seem nice. Right before I was going to leave, she did say that I did beautiful work. I don't know if she was just trying to say something nice before I left, or if she really thought it. I am so BUMMED that I don't have any pictures of my 4 most recent cakes icon_sad.gif They are of course some of my best and I couldn't show her....oh well.

Sorry so long, but I can't stop thinking about it, and I think my husband will kill me if he has to hear about it any more icon_wink.gif
