I noticed on the last cake I made that the day after I made it it looked like it was buldging in the middle, like that the dam was spreading out. Should I have made it stiffer?

I don't know if making it stiffer would help but you could try. Did you put the dam right along the edge of the cake? If so, next time try insetting it about 1/4" to allow for settling. Then if you can crumb coat and let it sit for awhile to give it time to settle before you finish it.

I leave mine at least a 1/4 " from the outside of the cake and then smoosh the layers together good and firm when I stack it........if there's any empty space left I just fill in with icing while I'm icing the cake

I think I've been putting the dam too close to the edge. I'll move it in and smoosh the layers together next time. Thanks, everyone!
