okay everyone i am new to this site and i've never made a cake that didnt use the recipe from the back of the box and oh ya i've always used the tubs of icing and if i want to get real crazy maybe some jared sprinkles. been watching the show ace of cakes on food network and am now adament about making an awesome cake for a friends baby shower. I've never used fondant before and have no idea what the best kind is and if everyone agrees it's homade whats a good recipe? or what about this satinice i keep reading about? is there a link somewhere on the site that goes over fondant basics? i really dont even know where to start guys and would appreciate any help possible. thanks!
I've had the most success using Toba Garrett's recipe that I don't think is much different than any other homemade recipe (excluding MMF). I bought a tub of Satin Ice just to "try" and was not that impressed to tell you the truth. It smelled like Play-Dough to me, and really stuck to my mouth. It is ok to work with, but I've found the more I make it on my own, the more I am learning about how to make it workable. Satin Ice is just so expensive. I bought a small tub for $14 (I know you can get it cheaper), when I can make the same amount for around $4, if not less. I am sure there will be others along to help you with the links!
I use this one http://www.cakecentral.com/cake_recipe-3183-Rhondas-Ultimate-MMF.html
It's Rhonda's Ultimate. It's super easy to do and I've had good luck with it, even though I've just done a few cakes. Since I just do it a couple times a year for fun, I don't ever get the practice that many of these cake people get. I know that would certainly help.
again so new to this site that i havent got the hang of posting comments but the above picture is the cake i want to try to make only i want mine to look more like the one from wilton.com, i'm throwing a baby shower in the middle of april for a baby boy and umbrellas are my theme, this cake even matched my invites perfectly. i have 2 weeks to get this done, having never used fondadt do you think this will be enough time? also i have read on previous posts that the mmf does not stretch as thin as other recipes or store bought brands, does this make a difference? also do i need a cake smoother to smoot out or is there some kind of homeade tool to use for this? thanks for the cheap idea, all about cutting corners . i will post a pic when i make this cake, keep your eyes out about april 15th!!any other fondant tips would be great. also what the heck is vinyl, like the old plastic like table clothes?
I use Marshmallow Fondant and LOVE IT! Here is my fav fondant info:
http://whatscookingamerica.net/PegW/Fondant.htm
I melt the marshmallows and 2-3 tablespoons of water/flavor in the microwave in 30 second intervals.
Then I grease my mixer with crisco pour in the marshmallows and half a bag of powdered sugar and use the dough hook. add more powdered sugar as needed.
Then I take it out and knead with my hands for a few minutes.
Things to remember:
Always keep crisco handy to cover hands in
Fondant dries out FAST so always keep it covered
went to rhondas recipe...what is princess cake or cake emulsion??? and where can i buy it??? sorry guys i know i'm helpless.
I don't know the answer about the emulsion, but I hope someone answers 'cause I'd like to know!
I have used fondant a bit and absolutely love it! The last few cakes I've made were with fondant and are better than anything I've ever done! (I stink at decorationg with BC!)
It's a good idea to do your fondant decorations a little ahead of time if you want them to be hard enough to hold up on their own well, but if you want them to curve around the cake at all then wait until the cake is ready for them.
Do you have an umbrella cookie cutter? That would make those umbrellas a lot easier. I made a baby shower cake in November for a friend with a silhouette of a pregnant woman holding an umbrella and had to cut it with a knife from a tracing of the picture! That sucked!
There are several ways to adhere fondant to fondant: You can use royal icing, water, corn syrup, etc. You just need something to give it that "stick". Since the umbrellas are on the side, make sure you use something that will hold it well until the "glue" dries.
Now, about the top. If you want to make this of fondant, make it ahead of time so it can dry. One of the CCers who has been here a while gave me some good info for stiffer fondant decos, add gumpaste (like 50/50) and it will harden better. OR, you could find a cute mini umbrella to stick on the top of the cake? Just a thought!
Good luck and I'm anxious to see how your first time goes!!
