I just made 3 batches of NFCS. I thought I'd make alot so I could give some to the neighbors, the family at Easter and the kids at my mom's daycare. Well I'm baking them and putting MMF on them and my family doesn't really care for them!!!! icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif They said they taste dull!! Now I don't know if I should give them out to the neighbors if they're "dull". All this work. I want to scream!!!! How can I make them tastier??

I can't help you with the ones you've already made, but next time, try adding almond extract and vanilla extract. It makes a HUGE difference. They taste so good that way. I made some once and had ran out of the almond extract and they were "dull" compared to the ones I normally make. I also add both flavorings to the royal icing. YUM!

I'm right there with you, family does not like NFSC one bit, not even when I added almond or cinnamon extract

I now make Penny's sugar cookies and they are much more flavorful and everyone will eat them.

I have made them before with the same complaint. You have to play with the flavoring. I just put my dough back in the mixer, added some extract and used the dough hook. It worked!

Knead some orange extract into the MMF and then outline them with candy melts. YUM! Especially if you outline in the chocolate flavors.

Try the cream cheese sugar cookies in the recipe section. I have been using these for years and everyone loves them.
I've also had people PM me from this site telling me how great they are.

I added powdered lemon extract to the dough and some lemon juice and powdered lemon extract to the royal antonias, really good. Had a whole flock of kids outside my house looking for freebies yesterday

so it's too late to add flavor to the cookies, not too late to add some creme bouquet to the icing........This totally lightens the flavor w/ a sort of citrus taste and I can almost promise you that your family will change their minds.
Next time add a little to your cookie dough also.

THanks guys! I did put extract in the cookies! Maybe I didn't put enough in...I'm just bummed because I made SOOO many of them. icon_lol.gif This was my first time making them with MMF. I think I like royal better. Oh well, I'll still do the final decorations and give them out. Next time I'll try different flavorings. It won't be for awhile though...my kitchen is full of cookies. icon_lol.gif

Joshsmom, how did Penny's work out? Were they easy to work with? Did they puff up alot when baked?

Subaru, same ?s for the cream cheese cookies, how are they to work with and did they puff up?

My family loves NFSC with rolled buttercream!...I can't make enough for them...they are always wanting more...! I do add 1 t. vanilla and 1 t. orange extract to dough...and also to the RBC...big difference!

flava cakes, take a brush and vanilla extract and give the fondant a few strokes as if you are painting...it should add a boost of flavor.

flavacakes ~ Penny's recipe I found does not spread or puff. Since we are not big almond fans I do put in cinnamon extract instead and add more than what the recipe calls for for extra flavor. The recipe says it doesn't have to be chilled but I chill after I've cut them anyway so maybe that's why they don't spread.

I have to say I like the Royal better, but I add a little Karo Syrup to mine. Gets rid of the meringue taste. Marshmallow fondant tastes great, unitl it goes on my cookies. It is a bit dull. But, give them away anyway. You will be surprised how other people love them.

THanks guys, I'll still give them away. To me they don't even look that good, decorating wise, but to normal people they'll probably be fine. icon_lol.gif

We just LUV the NFSC recipe! But I always add more vanilla than the recipe calls for. Whoever writes those things just doesn't have the passion for vanilla like I do, I guess! If the recipe calls for 1 tsp, I use 3 tsp! (One tsp! Heck, you can't even SMELL the vanilla in that teeny amount! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gif )

And extra vanilla in the icing, too!

You can also use coffee creamers to add a little flavor--I've tried the liquid and the powdered, either will work--such as Vanilla Chai or Vanilla Caramel (my DH's favorite). But I have to agree, the first batch I made (just like the recipe) seemed a little dull. I know sugar cookies are supposed to be just a little plain, since you ice them, but they just needed a little punch.
