Does anyone know if Fondant can be eaten? I have heard that you can eat it but it tastes terrible. Is this true. How and you make fondant taste better so that it can be edible?

some brands of fondant taste terrible, other brands, and homemade tastes good, but very sweet. not everyone will like fondant though, no matter which brand you use or how you make it. the texture bothers some people, its kinda chewy. try satin ice brand, a lot of people like it. wilton's is terrible, everyone i can think if hates it. i make my own, mmf and regular fondant. about 75% of people will usually eat the fondant i make. and as i said, some people never will. they can just peal it off and enjoy the cake with filling and the bc underneath.

The wilton fondant taste horrible. I know a few people that like it. I personally think it is not edible because of the taste. Yes it is edible. I found MMF here on CC. I love the taste, it is easy to make and work with[/url]

Usually, it goes on the cake and comes off when their serving it in many of my cake deliveries. i haven't found a great tasting fondant, it's really not my fav either. It doesn't bother me that they don't want the fondant, it does feel weird and chewy so i sympathize. Fondant is usually just for looks anyways.

Wilton tastes bad. Satin Ice, Pettinice, FonX all taste good....MMF (marshmallow fondant) taste good as well. There is a recip here on CC on how to make MMF. If you make it, dont add all the ps (powdered sugar) it calls for.

Most store bought fondant's are horrible tasting. However, if you make your own you can flavor it to whatever you heart desires. Rhonda's MMF in the recipes section is great because it's not quite so sweet. White chocolate fondant is always a winner too. Hope that helps some! icon_biggrin.gif

Is it possible to use marshmallow fluff instead of marshmallows?

My kids and I like the Wilton fondant. We use flavored extracts to attach it to stuff, though, and always brush on a flavored extract (lemon is our favorite) after we do a cake. I like the shine you get by brushing something on it after covering the cake. We don't like it as much without the flavoring, but it's not terrible. That's the B family opinion, anyway! LOL

I make MMF with marshmallow creme. There is a recipe on this site for Easy MMF. I think it calls for 8oz marshmallow creme and appx. 1# box of powdered sugar. The Jet Puff Marshmallow Creme smallest container is only 7oz so becare not to add too much powdered sugar. I personally like this recipe and I have made some decorations and I have covered a small cake with it. I have a carousel cake due the end of April that will be covered in MMF and will have MMF circles and stripes for accents.

The MMF recipe is fairly cheap to make so at least give it a try. I tried a half recipe the first time. I also color in small batches after I mix mine and I have had no trouble doing that.

i use toba garrett's fondant, here's the link:

http://www.cakecentral.com/cake_recipe-2127-25-Toba-Garretts-fondant.html
i always need to use more than 2 lbs ps for this recipe, otherwise its really sticky. it yields a lot of fondant.

and for mmf, i just melt 16 oz mm's with 2 tbsp water add 1 or 2 tsp flavoring and about 6 cups PS. thumbs_up.gif

SimpleAffair,

I wasn't sure by your post if you couldn't find the Easy MMF recipe, so here is a link.

http://www.cakecentral.com/cake_recipe-2148-Easy-Marshmallow-Fondant.html

darkchocolate

Easy Marshmallow Fondant
1 16oz tub of Marshmallow fluff
6-8 cups of confectioners sugar
2 tsp of flavoring of your choice
paste colors (Optional)
Empty contents of marshmallow fluff in large bowl. add flavoring and stir with spoon. If you desire to color the fondat add your desired color at this stage. Then add confectioners sugar two cups at a time and mix with spoon until no longer sticky, then place on large pastry board or mat lightly rubbed with vegetable shortening and knead until smooth and pliable. Roll out to desired size for covering cake.

Note: The finished fondant is bright white in color due to the marshmallow fluff, which is whiter than marshmallows

To Store: wrap in plastic wrap then place in zip loc bag
