I want to know how to make royal icing butterflies....I have seen them on cakes here at CC and would like to make it for a cake next month icon_biggrin.gif I love how cute they look. Does anyone have any ideas, tips, or intructions on how to make them? What about a good royal icing recipe to make them with? I will really appreciate any help/comments.

Hi! I have never read on CC how other users would make them, but this is what I would do: Find a picture of the butterflies that you like, Stick them on a flat board and cover the board in waxed paper. Pipe over the image in the colours you like. To make a butterfly with open wings, do each wing separately and when the icing is properly dry (I'd leave it to dry for a day) carefully lift them off the paper with a knife. Pipe a body on the waxed paper then stick the wings into it. Leave for another day before lifting off.

The royal icing recipe I always use is simply 500g icing sugar and 1 egg white.

Post a pic when you're finished!

Good tips from scgriffiths. When I've made them I've left them to dry for longer as I have a devil of a time with royal icing runouts! Peggy Porschen's book 'Pretty Party Cakes' has lots of instructions and templates for making these, they're not hard once you have the royal icing consistency right.

you can also make them out of chocolate too, just another suggestion. I just made them for this cake and if you know how to do chocolate transfers, they are super easy.

With help from cc members I figured out how to do them.

I just made them for a cake last week. I did pretty much what scgriffiths said. I have a template from Spectacular Cakes, and I piped the wing outlines on wax paper. The only thing I did differently was to pipe the bodies directly on the cake, and stick the wings in them. I didn't have time to do them on wax paper, too. I wish I had, 'cause I had some major problems getting them to stay. Next time!

Also, if you're going to put dots or designs on the wings, do so right after you flood the main color. I flooded all the wings of a color at a time, and then I went back and put on my dots. A lot of the dots sort of caved in.

I'm not happy with the cake in general, but here you can see what I did.
