I did one a couple of weeks ago, all buttercream. I used the Wilton food color sprays. I started with the colors in the middle of the so called circles first and move outward. You don't need to spray alot. At first if will look runny but don't worry it will dry fine. Hope this helps. I attached a picture.

Hi Myriam,
I did a tie dye cake using buttercream. It's not exactly the same look as I've seen on other cakes using an airbrush but I think it was easy enough to tell what it was suppose to be.

I piped all the colors using tip #3 in lines, side by side in the pattern that I wanted. Then took a toothpick and gently pulled it through the buttercream in straight lines to acheive that effect. Take a look at the picture below. Hope that helps.

Maybe thin down your color gels with a clear extract or vodka/everclear/gin and paint each of the colors on--while the colors are still "watered" down you can paint the next color on to easily blend them together. Just a thought--never tried it. icon_wink.gif

have your buttercream well crusted... take a coffee filter fold it like a snowflake and dip in diluted cake color open and lay on the cake press lightly and remove....

ok I have not done it BUT I have dipped paper towels in the cake color diluted with water and dabbed on for water or browns for a pizza crust... and I have done coffee filters with preschoolers and water colors... when they lay them on the table or paper it colors the paper

so in theory it should be what you want

msmeg, that's what I was thinking. I've gotten some paper towels to look really pretty & tie dyish. It would probably transfer well to a cake.
